Daniela Louise Smith was born April 15, 2012 (on her mommy's birthday!) A perfect and healthy delivery but at 6 weeks Dani started having seizures. After tons of tests (MRI, spinal tap, PET scan, blood work, genetic, metabolic tests-you name it) doctors were unable to find a cause. All of her tests came back normal except for her EEG. She was having 100s of seizures a day and was diagnosed with a catastrophic form of epilepsy. We tried every medicine - including injections, even some that had blindness as a possible side effect but it wasn't until she started the ketogenic diet that she had her first day without a seizure. It was nothing short of a miracle! Praise God! Her epileptologists at Children's Hospital Orange County are amazing and have definitely stabalized her from the agony of where she was before. Instead of the 100s of seizures every time she woke up we are down to 3 or 4 a day.
The developmental delays that so many seizures left on Dani are grim. She has to have a g-tube to help her eat and doctors say she will never walk or talk. But we know with all our heart that with God all things are possible. She is our little warrior and we have such hope for Dani!
We have done all the therapies insurance has had to offer. But we discovered an amazing therapy that is not covered. This, along with mounting medical expenses, is one of the reasons we have set up a fundraiser for Dani.
We have seen great progress with the Anat Baniel Method. This gentle approach has already made a big impact on our little girl. Dani is making sounds again and starting to move her legs!
