HOPE - SSM is a non-profit organisation. Our mission is to support single mothers who drop out of school, have no jobs and are vulnerable to poverty, discrimination, violation and different kinds of daily abuse.
Right now HOPE develops through Made by Aya. A non-profit co-production community-based in Stockholm, Sweden.
THE FOUNDER OF HOPE
My name is Fatou Sawo from the Gambia, I’m currently studying fashion design, social entrepreneurship and nonprofit, I live in Stockholm. I moved to Sweden in 2015. What inspired me to start up HOPE is the past experience I had when was in the Gambia.
Where I came from (Bakau), about 75% of girls drop out of school because of peer pressure and teenage pregnancy, but people don’t talk about it, they brush it under the carpet.
It has now become worse, more teenage girls are pushed out from a normal life with no help or support from the family or society. All too many, end up getting into things like prostitution and this has to change. We should not keep quiet about it nor should we talk about the problem with no solution.
I want single mothers to be empowered, to continue seeking knowledge, learning skills, developing and getting involved in their communities.
NEXT STEP
This Autumn Hope S.S.S together with Made By Aya, Folk Lab, what took you so long and Dramaten& are organising a performance workshop, a workshop that is a meaningful meeting where people that have something urgent to talk about and in which the audience gets to participate. Performance workshop adds a tangible aspect to the learning and culture experience. The participant makes something in a strictly choreographed and at the same time open and safe space.
After the performance workshop, we will be starting our first project in the Gambia.
We are starting up a project in 2020 to build a centre for single mothers in the Gambia. The centre has a school, people and resources to support and help them learn skills, entrepreneurship courses, build self-esteem, different types of programs, workshops etc. HOPE SSM is a movement creating jobs, better and more respectful life and a place in society and opportunities for single mothers.
WHY IS HOPE SSM IMPORTANT?
HOPE SSM support and empowers single mothers in general and especially those that are facing sexual violation, discrimination and vulnerable to poverty.
In the latest survey and report launched by the Ministry of Health in the Gambia on behalf of the Finance Minister, the numbers cited that “almost one in five (18 per cent) of adolescent women age 15 to 19 are already mothers or pregnant with their first child. Overall, 18 per cent of young women age 15 to 19 has begun childbearing which increases with age”.
The report continues to highlight: “…that child pregnancy is a cause of some major health effects and it is closely associated with morbidity and mortality, for both the mother and child. In addition, childbearing during the teenage years frequently have adverse social consequences, particularly regarding educational attainment, because women who become mothers in their teens are more likely to curtail their education”.
PRE-STUDY
To achieve HOPE SSM’s goals, we need to involve the single mothers and interact with them, know more about the problem instead of assuming what the problem is.
Spring 2019 we are planning our first step:
-To do background research
- To make a short documentary about teenage pregnancy in the Gambia
- Formalizing our network in the Gambia and build a team
- Do at least two pilot workshop together with single teenage mothers
- Do some activities with the teenage/single mothers and a small campaign to spread awareness about teenage pregnancy.
WE WILL USE THE MONEY FOR
-Travelling to the Gambia
-Accommodation
-A documentary about teenage pregnancy
-Workshop and activities with the teenage/single mothers
-Rent a hall for the workshop and activities
-Campaign
-Sustenance and transportation
-Foodstuffs, stationeries etc for the teenage/single mothers we will be working with.
