I AM VOLUNTEERING TO WORK WITH REFUGEES IN THESSALONIKI, GREECE

Retiring after many years working in community mental health and practicing psychotherapy in the Boston area,I knew I wanted to work with refugees, especially mothers and children. Researching various possibilities, I came upon Hope Project. When I spoke with them about my background in mental health, I also told them I am an artist versed in the non-verbal epressive therapies, ie art therapy, movement therapy, play therapy and yoga. The response to my telling them this was an overwhelming and welcoming WOW! We can use you.

HOPE PROJECT AND WHAT I WILL DO THERE

Hope Project is a new and growing community center in the city of Thessaloniki. After the refugee camp outside the city was razed because of its deplorable squalor, the camp residents were dispersed into the city. Two remarkable women, Tania de Sousa and Eleanor Yankah, came upon children living on the streets without any educational or social services. Starting in 2016 they began creating a plan for a community center where the goal is to empower displaced children and adults through formal and informal programs to prepare them for the next step in their journey to a future in a western county. One of this unique center's goals is to have the volunteers act as role models and mentors so the members of the refugee community can begin to take on roles of leadership themselves. This is an approach that makes HOPE PROJECT very special. As a therapist who has spent years dealing with trauma victims I know the power that art and body work play in the healing experience that words often cannot. These therapies can reach a deep place, not just of trauma but also of joy. I am eager to start.

WHY I AM DOING THIS

The simple answer is I am a human being. The personal answer is I am the daughter of two immigrants and I am a Jew who has been touched by the experience of the Holocaust and hold the stories of my friends and family who survived that nightmare. And these nightmares of displacement, incarceration and loss continue. I feel I owe a debt to history. As a mother and a grandmother, I want to do more than donate money to a refugee organization. Volunteering is not just to benefit the refugees; I know it will give me back as much as I give.

Help spread the word!
