<div>For the past 11 years, Ray has served as a State University of New York (SUNY) police officer — a role that he takes great pride in because of his commitment to helping others and serving his community.  On top of that, Ray is a devoted husband to his wife Laura and a loving father to their three children: Izzy (13), Liam (10), and Rowan (8).

<div>Together, Ray and Laura have built a home rooted in kindness, compassion, and community. They volunteer at school, show up whenever someone needs help, and give of themselves without hesitation. Most recently, they took on leadership of a Capital Region youth lacrosse program, giving local kids the opportunity to learn the sport, gain mentorship, and experience the power of being part of a team.

<div>Now the Haugen family is facing the unimaginable.

<div>Just after Thanksgiving, Ray underwent what was expected to be routine gallbladder surgery. During the procedure, doctors discovered severe heart failure. What should have been a straightforward recovery became life-altering. Months later, his heart function remains critically reduced, and Ray is now in need of a heart transplant.

<div>To receive the specialized care he needs, Ray is being transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston — hours from his home in Rotterdam, New York. This extended hospitalization brings difficult challenges, including frequent travel for Laura and the children, lodging expenses in an unfamiliar city, and mounting medical costs. Even with health insurance, they face a significant financial burden, as medical bills, copayments, and specialized equipment continue to add up.

<div>As the family’s primary earner, Ray is unable to work, adding financial strain to an already overwhelming situation.  Laura is self-employed and has continued working as she is able while also caring for Ray and their three children. However, as they move into the next critical phase of the transplant process, she will need to step away from her business to be fully present for Ray and their family during this uncertain time. With Ray unable to work, and Laura now putting her career on hold, the financial strain becomes even more significant.
