Hope For Umut

Although you may think growing up in one of the world’s greatest cities can be nothing short of amazing, my 10 year old cousin, Umut, may just disagree. I’d like to start off by thanking each and every one of you for taking the time to visit this page.
My little cousin has been struggling with fluid build up in the brain. Born prematurely at 28 weeks, he acquired an infection in the hospital. In the NICU, he developed meningitis which led to hydrocephalus. His first brain surgery was just after birth and another 7 surgeries were performed in the past 10 years of his life. This totally preventable situation has cost him his ability to walk, talk, sit, or even eat. Unfortunately, Umut is in need of another operation that is by far an outreach and completely out of my Aunt’s hands. His condition is now very critical. He has scoliosis. Because of his present condition where he is unable to move and the scoliosis, there is a high risk of organ damage. If this costly operation is not performed, his organs will slowly get damaged due mainly to the pressure of his scoliosis. His breathing and eating are also going to be crucially affected. This operation needs to be performed as soon as possible because time is of the essence.
We have had many helping hands throughout the past ten years and could not be any more thankful. I believe that everybody deserves a chance at life. Ironically, his Turkish name, Umut, translated is “hope.” I have hope that my friends, family and everyone all over the world will come together and help my cousin overcome this obstacle. This would make him live a more comfortable life.
