My grandson, my nephew and my granddaughter are all on the autism spectrum but only two of them have access to support. 
 
Hello, my name is Agnes "Dodo" Rupiya. I am originally from the Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) and have been living in Hamburg, Germany, for over 30 years. 
 
My personal journey with autism began through my nephew and my grandson in Hamburg, both of whom are on the autism spectrum. Witnessing their growth with access to diagnosis, therapy, and support inspired me to actively support Autism Eswatini. 
 
However, the urgency became deeply personal when I learned that my granddaughter in Eswatini is also living with autism yet has access to only the most limited clinical, therapeutic, and general support services. This painful reality is what motivated me to create this GoFundMe campaign. 
 
The Need in Eswatini 
 
In Eswatini, the number of children and individuals living with autism and other neurological disabilities is steadily increasing. Across the country's four regions, it is estimated that between 14–20% of the population lives with a neurological disability, although not all regions have been fully assessed. 
 
With a population of approximately 1.4 million people, the lack of appropriate infrastructure, early diagnosis, therapy options, and long-term support presents a serious challenge for families and communities. Many children grow up misunderstood, isolated, and without access to services that could significantly improve their quality of life. 
 
Our Solution: A One-Stop Care Centre 
 
Autism Eswatini is establishing a One-Stop Care Centre that will provide essential services for children and individuals living with autism and other neurological conditions. 
 
This centre will help close the gap in:

<li>Family guidance and caregiver support

<li>Inclusion, understanding, and dignity

The Project Plan 
 
The Care Centre will be developed in three phases. 

Phase 1 will focus on:

<li>Secure fencing of the centre 
</li>
<li>Estimated completion time: 6 months 
</li>

Funding for this phase comes primarily from Micro-Projects Autism Eswatini, with a 10% contribution from the Luhlokohla community. Previous fundraising initiatives including the Autism Challenge Hiking Event and the Autism Fundraising Golf Tournament have already received support from local companies, individuals, and government partners.

The introduction of Social Care Assistants (Alltagsbegleiter) offers a cost-effective, culturally resonant, and highly impactful solution to bridge this gap.
 
1. Enriching Life Quality for the Elderly

In Swazi culture, the elderly are the keepers of wisdom and tradition. However, as family structures shift and younger generations move for work, many seniors face isolation or physical decline.

Combatting Loneliness: Social Care Assistants provide companionship, which significantly reduces the risk of depression and cognitive decline.

Safety and Mobility: They assist with daily walks and monitoring, ensuring that the elderly can stay in their homes safely for longer.

Health Navigation: While not medical staff, they ensure medication compliance and accompany seniors to local clinics, improving health outcomes.

2. Supporting Families with Neurological Disabilities

Conditions such as stroke recovery, Parkinson’s, or dementia place an immense emotional and physical burden on family caregivers.

Respite Care: By taking over the daily supervision and social engagement of the patient, assistants provide families with "respite," allowing them to work or rest without guilt.

Cognitive Stimulation: Through simple puzzles, storytelling, and structured routines, assistants help maintain the neurological functions of the individual, slowing the progression of certain conditions.

Dignity in Daily Life: They assist with non-medical tasks that preserve the individual’s dignity, such as grooming and meal participation.

3. Accessible Support for the Autism Spectrum

Full-scale behavioral therapy (such as ABA or occupational therapy) is often prohibitively expensive. Social Care Assistants provide a "bridge" for these individuals.

Routine Reinforcement: Individuals on the autism spectrum thrive on routine. Assistants help maintain a predictable schedule, reducing anxiety and meltdowns.

Social Skill Practice: In a safe, one-on-one environment, an assistant can help an autistic individual practice social cues and communication in real-world settings (e.g., at the market or community events).

Safety Supervision: For families with "elopers" (those who wander), an assistant provides an extra pair of eyes, ensuring the individual stays safe within the community.
 
4. Economic and Social Advantages

Implementing a workforce of Social Care Assistants within Eswatini provides three distinct advantages:

Affordability: Training community members as assistants is faster and more cost-effective than training doctors or specialized therapists. This makes their services accessible to lower-income households.

Job Creation: This creates a new vocational path for Emaswati, particularly youth and women, who have a natural aptitude for caregiving.

Community Integration: Instead of placing individuals in institutions, care assistants allow vulnerable citizens to remain active, visible, and integrated members of their local Imiphakatsi.
