My name is Katrina, and I’m starting this GoFundMe on behalf of my sister, Frances, who is preparing for a very urgent and non-ideal trip to Ecuador to help our brother, Jonathon.

This situation is unexpected and heartbreaking. Jonathon — many of you will remember his long and difficult journey through addiction and mental illness — has been sober for 10 years this past April 20th and has worked incredibly hard to rebuild his life. For the past two years, he’s been living happily and peacefully in Ecuador, where he’s found real healing and stability.

Recently, Jonathon was unknowingly and unwillingly exposed to scopolamine, a dangerous substance that can trigger severe confusion and psychotic symptoms. This exposure has caused a psychotic break, leaving his local friends and community deeply concerned and unsure of how to help. Despite this crisis, Jonathon remains sober — this is not a relapse — but it is a serious medical and psychological emergency that requires immediate support.

Frances is now preparing to travel to Ecuador on very short notice to assess Jonathon’s condition, connect him with medical and psychological help, and make sure he’s safe without removing him from the environment that’s been so important to his recovery.

This trip comes at an extremely difficult time. Frances recently moved across the country, is still getting resettled, and has primary physical care of her youngest child. She will find a way to do this on her own if she must — but she shouldn’t have to. Our family, friends, and those who know Jonathon’s story understand how much he’s overcome, and how deeply Frances cares for her brother.
