Hope after Harvey: PB&J for All

Donation protected
My name is Truong Lam and I am a native Houstonian trying to do my part to help with the relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey.  I represent the executive director of a nonprofit called The Village Connect in Houston, TX.

As many of you all know, our beautiful city was recently struck by major flooding which has displaced nearly hundreds of thousands of Houstonians from their homes and lives.  This historic catastrophe has left many individuals homeless, hungry, and lost.  Although some of us were fortunate enough to escape the storm relatively unscathed, a large number of Houstonians find themselves slowly picking up the pieces to rebuild their lives.  In such dire times, we need to stand together and restore hope in whatever way we can.  That is why we are asking for your help.

The Village Connect (TVC) (501c3) and Rice Coalition on Hunger and Homelessness (RCOHH) have teamed up to tackle the largest sandwich drive: Hope After Harvey: Sandwiches for All to be hosted at Rice University.  We are looking to provide 1,000 sack lunches and sanitary kits to the many evacuees of Hurricane Harvey.  Here's what we need:

$1,500 for sack lunches
-sandwich bread
-peanut butter
-jelly
-ziploc bags
-parchment paper (to wrap sandwiches)
-paper bags
-granola bars
-fruit snacks

$5,000 for gender-neutral sanitary kits
-deodorant
-dental hygiene kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, floss)
-hand sanitizer
-razor
-shaving cream
-ziploc bags

Total: $6,500

*Additionally, we will also include a slip of paper which provides a link to resources for victims of Harvey.

The proceeds will be deposited into The Village Connect account and will be used in its entirety for the purpose of making the sack lunches and the sanitary kits. The sack lunches and sanitary kits will be distributed to 5 local shelters in Houston, which are at capacity due to the influx in those who are homeless.

The Village Connect is a nonprofit in Houston focused on disrupting the vicious cycle of homelessness through longterm, comprehensive assistance.  We do this by connecting homeless or financially insecure individuals with resources and services which can best serve them, while tracking their progress over time. https://www.thevillageconnect.org/

Rice Coalition on Hunger and Homelessness (or RCOHH) is a student organization at Rice University dedicated to mobilizing awareness and creating opportunities for college students to understand homelessness in the city of Houston.  They are best known for a monthly tradition called Sandwiches-For-All (SFA) during which students and the local community convene to assemble PB&J sack lunches to be distributed to Houston homeless shelters and homeless service providers.

In this time of hardship and despair, we feel that it is our responsibility to do what we can, big or small, to help our community rebuild and rebound from such a tragic natural disaster.  As we've already seen, the community is strong and can come together during the most difficult of times.  It is times like this where every little bit counts, and we believe our sandwiches and sanitary kits will be the Hope after Harvey that we all need to rebuild our beautiful city of Houston, TX.

Thank you for your consideration.

Love,
