Honoring Henry Winston's Vision for Freedom

Donation protected
Please join the Saturday Free School for Philosophy & Black Liberation to commemorate Henry Winston, Chairman of the Communist Party USA from 1966-86, with a weekend of panels, discussion, music, and art. In a moment of deep crisis for the youth and people, we honor and study Winston’s life, thinking, and vision for freedom to find a way forward for humanity and hope in our time.

For Henry Winston, rather than a separate struggle, the Black Freedom Movement was a strategic component of the revolutionary and democratic processes in the US. For him, it stood alongside the class struggle in importance to understanding the essence of the revolutionary process in the US. We believe this ideological clarity and pursuit for the Truth and a people’s culture are paramount today.

Over our three-day symposium, we will study Winston’s life in three stages: His youth in Mississippi and finding the unemployed movement amidst the Great Depression, his imprisonment by the US government during the Cold War, and ultimately his election to Chairman of the Communist Party USA and as a figure in the world communist movement. We will discuss the importance of Winston’s thinking for the world’s anticolonial movements and in the struggle for peace, and better understand the current crisis of young people in this country and the ideological imperative of art for freedom, especially now.

Please consider making a donation to our event. The money we receive will go toward a donation to our venue, the Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia, as well as meals and refreshments for the attendees.
