SA Apiarist Assoc. KI Beekeepers Bushfire Relief

Kangaroo Island beekeepers have been devastated by the most severe bushfires in the islands history.  Around 60% of the island has been burnt, destroying significant areas of native flora vital to the survival of the islands bee hives.

The islands Ligurian strain of honeybees is said to be the most pure strain in the world.  The island bee population is so unique that it is protected in legislation as a sanctuary protecting the island bee genetics but also preventing many pest and diseases entering the population.  For this reason the island population of honeybees has global importance and the survival of this population is incredibly important.

Around 1,100 of the 4,000 hives have been destroyed by the fires and many more have been spared but to have the flora they had been foraging destroyed leaving them with no food to survive.

The South Australian Apiarists Association in conjunction with the Kangaroo Island Beekeepers Group are raising money to support ALL island beekeepers.  Many of the 50 registered apiarists have been affected in some way by the fires.  This fund will support those beekeepers and in particular the beekeepers that are ineligible for government support to get back on their feet and ensure the survival of this island industry.

This fund is the ONLY industry driven fund specifically for KI beekeepers that will ensure the money is distributed to those in need.

Funding is needed in the immediate short term to purchase sugar syrup and pollen supplements along with sugar feeders to help provide nutrition for the effected hives.  In the longer term the funds will be used to assist the island bee industry get back on its feet and on the road to recovery.
