What: Homestead Challenge - 18-mile trail challenge (“Rachel Carson Half”)
I will be completing this challenge and dedicating each 1/3 to someone and a specific cancer research foundation where funds will be donated. Thermo Fisher Scientific will 100% match donations for both me and Leah up to $1,500 individually so if we raise $3,000 the matching will double our donation and each group will get $2,000 for a total of $6,000 in donations. If we exceed our goal, we will make a charitable gift to the Rachel Carson Trails Conservancy and Animal Friends with the remainder!
First 6 Miles: Dedicated to – Dave Salvatore. Currently kicking Hairy Cell Leukemia’s ass. My uncle Dave’s battle is what initially gave me the inspiration to do this. He is an avid adventure racer, and having never done a challenge like this, I thought it would be a perfect thing to do! He got me started so this challenge starts for him!
Charity: Hairy Cell Leukemia Foundation.
Second 6 Miles: Dedicated to – Alfie Garrett. Alfie passed on November 23rd, 2023. He fought Colon Cancer and faced it head on like the badass that he truly was. This portion of the race is HARD and has HUGE elevation climbs. Alfie was there for me in a big way when I was very young and gave me strength when I needed it most. My memories with him will be crucial for this part of the race.
Charity: Global Colon Cancer Association.
Final 6 Miles: Dedicated to – Tim Edmiston. Tim passed on December 23rd, 2023. He battled lung cancer and made a focus to spend as much time with his kids and grandchildren as he could. Tim was truly remarkable in every sense of the word. He was kind and genuine. As I made my health changes, he was always the first one to tell me how proud he was of me. I miss him greatly. When I need the energy to finish out this challenge, I know it will be Tim that gets me across the finish line.
