My name is Jahkil Jackson and I’m from Chicago, Illinois. When I was 5, I went to feed the homeless with my aunt. I had never seen anything like it and didn't understand why so many people were out there in the cold, sleeping on the ground with dirt and rats. I asked my parents to buy homes for everyone and since we obviously couldn't do that, I had to figure out how I could help.
So, when I was 8, my family helped me start my own organization Project I Am to build awareness for the homeless. I distribute Blessing Bags filled with hand warmers for the polar vortex winters in Chicago, wipes, socks, deodorant, hand sanitizer, granola bars, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bottled water, and more. Each bag costs approximately $10 to create.
I am now 12 years old and have been blessed to help almost 40,000 men, women, and children across the world! I have given out bags to those in need in Chicago, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Detroit, Maryland, Virginia and Idaho. I have also provided Blessing Bags to orphans in Mbabane and Swaziland, as well as volcano victims in Guatemala, and hurricane survivors in Florida, Houston, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas.
I am asking for your help to reach my goal of impacting over 50,000 by the end of 2020 and support an upcoming project to help build Tiny Homes to provide shelter for those sleeping on the streets of Chicago.
Can you imagine not having a place to sleep at night? What if it was your friend, cousin, mom or dad? What if it were you? Why wait to be great? We can make an impact today.
I continue to do this because one day I hope to demolish homelessness. Right now, I work hard every day to bring a bit of hope to people's lives. My favorite part is seeing the smiles on their faces when I give them the bag. They tell me "God Bless You" and it brings me joy.
