HomeGround will change the way you think about cafes.

HomeGround is a not-for-profit cafe in Tanti Park on the Mornington Peninsula. We provide vocational training to our regions young people. We're helping to foster hope for the future by providing employment, engagement and education.

The Mornington Peninsula is known for its pristine beaches, world class wineries and vibrant cafe scene but did you know that it also has one of the highest rates of youth unemployment in Australia. It also has, at any given moment, 200 unfilled jobs in hospitality.

Some of our countries most affluent communities sit alongside some of our most underprivileged. The opportunity to find meaningful employment is out of reach for many of our communities most at risk young people. Whether it is a lack of public transport, inadequate training or simply low self-belief, the challenge of finding a good job is a real and present issue facing many of our youth.

HomeGround aims to bridge the gap between our unemployed youth and the opportunity of a career in our regions hospitality industry. We have now been open for 2 years and have helped young people like Alex develop new skills, build confidence and enter the hospitality workforce on the Mornington Peninsula.

"My name is Alex Johnson* I’m 25 years old and this past year I was given the opportunity to train and work at HomeGround cafe. After completing my traineeship I am extremely happy to report that I have found a full time position in hospitality management, and honestly owe this to the beautiful training environment provided at HG.”

We're aiming to double the number of trainees we take in 2020 but we'll need some extra support to ensure we continue to operate to our full potential.

There are a number of ways you can financially support the work HomeGround does in our community

1. HomeGround will change the way you see you daily coffee. DONATE $100 to provide comprehensive barista training for an unemployed young person

HomeGround provides an opportunity for young people to begin their journey towards a fulfilling career in hospitality. We partner with Commonfolk Coffee Company to provide barista training in their world class coffee roastery. We don't just like good coffee... we LOVE IT! We ensure that any of our barista trainees understands coffee from crop to cup. Whether it's the impact of terroir and climate at origin, how coffee is processed and roasted, through to espresso extraction and pouring the perfect latte art. Our barista courses are both engaging and comprehensive allowing our trainees to immediately become valuable assets to any cafe on the hunt for their next rockstar barista.

2.     HomeGround will change the way you think about youth unemployment. DONATE $500 to provide an ongoing traineeship for an unemployed young person

We want to provide opportunities for our trainees to gain meaningful employment in the hospitality industry. Our traineeship provides young people with the skills to work both front and back of house positions. They are taught safe food handling practices, customer service, money handling and much much more. We run our trainee cohort over the course of the school term and partner with RTO's to ensure that the training received is accredited and relevant. Any young person that completes our training program will be fully equip to begin a job in one of our regions incredible venues.

3.    HomeGround will change the way you enjoy your big breaky. DONATE $1000 to help fit out our commercial kitchen.

In 2020 we want to up our food game. We are investing heavily into our back of house and developing a new cafe menu. Do achieve everything we want to do we'll need to purchase more commercial kitchen equipment including a passthrough dishwasher, commercial microwaves and a new gas oven / cooktop. None of this is cheap so we need your assistance. With a new commercial kitchen we will be able to offer cooks apprenticeships alongside our hospitality traineeships. The next generation of superstar chefs could be starting their journey in our humble little cafe. Talk about punching above your weight!

Hospitality and tourism has the highest skills shortage of any sector on the Mornington Peninsula, and at the same time we have some of the highest youth unemployment in Victoria. By contributing towards HomeGround you're helping kickstart the careers of our next hospitality superstars. Not only will you be making a genuine difference in the life of a young person but the future of your morning coffee may depend on it.

We need your help to ensure we can fully fund what's required to fulfil our objectives. Donations are needed immediately and all donations are tax deductible.

We're also interested in anyone with a useful trade that can help with the fit out, donations of materials, or anyone with catering or hospitality equipment that they can donate or offer at a discounted price.

Support the local community and help provide meaningful employment opportunities for our young people.
