Home gardens for out of work artisans

***UPDATE*** we have added rewards to new donations!!! Please see below.

African communities are about to face not only a health emergency, but also a social and humanitarian crisis.

As a small craft company in Eswatini we relied solely on tourism and export for the sale of our handmade products and when the pandemic appeared, our sales plummeted as lockdown regulations took force all over the world. Borders closed, shops shut and tourism came to a halt. Our artisans; many of whom where the sole earners for their families are now struggling to afford basic necessities like food. The uncertainty of the future has forced us to think how to build resilience. Some of our artisans have had no choice but to return to their rural homes, unable to afford rent in the city.  Fortunately most have a piece of land they can farm as part of their family's homestead and it is their wish to start vegetable gardens.

In Eswatini more than half the rural population already live below the poverty line. While developed countries have resources and government stipends, people or companies in developing countries often have nothing to fall back on when the economy fails.

We are therefore raising much-needed funds to start an organic garden project

The goal is that each artisan will have their own productive garden in their home. 13 women will be trained in basic permaculture and organic gardening techniques for the purpose of increasing their skill-set, family food security, and physical/mental health, in collaboration with local community organizations Mbabane Urban Gardens  and GUBA .

Workshops will be mostly practical where participants learn some of the core
elements for creating and maintaining a healthy, sustainable and organic gardens.  All money raised will be directly spent on training, buying seedlings, fencing and tools.

While working at Quazi they will be able to attend to their gardens and feed their families, and learn a new skill for their future that they can share with their community.

What your donation can buy:

£10 – seed and seedlings kit for one

£16 - training in compost making for one

£25 - fencing rolls for one garden

£100 – group training on basic permaculture principles

Our goal is to raise £1000 which will help us in starting a garden for each of our artisans. This is phase 1 and just the foundation and we hope to be able to launch phase 2  soon.
