Send Future ESL Teacher to Mexico!

My name is Natasha Athey and I am studying Elementary Education and Teaching English as a Second Language at Appalachian State University.

I have a passion for education. I truly do feel a calling to make teaching my vocation. I have had lots of experience in classrooms and places of learning throughout my high school and college career, such as being a volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club in my area, working with children from birth to five years old in my church's childcare, volunteering with my area's Special Needs Baseball League, teaching pre-schoolers songs and crafts at VBS, refereeing for middle school robot competitions, and even working with rural South African children through Emoyeni (that's where my picture above comes from!).

I know I want to be a teacher, and I want to make education accessible to all children - even students who come to my class who do not know English.

In fact, part of my teaching philosophy is this:

It is a mission of mine to teach English in a way that is accessible, functional, and respectful to the learner's native background.

For me, this means learning about the culture that my students come from. This means taking a deep look into the things that push families to immigrate to the U.S.

I have this chance.

I have the opportunity to go to Oaxaca, Mexico, with peers who have the same dreams for their students as I do for mine. For ten days in May, we will be listening to personal experiences, visiting schools, and meeting with teachers and students in Oaxaca. Our focus during this trip is to understand why people immigrate to the U.S., how U.S. politics have contributed to this, and the impact of emigration on communities like those in Oaxaca.

I am so excited for this opportunity! I have been working with students from all backgrounds, and I can only imagine how beneficial this experience will be, especially when I can understand a students' cultural background better.

However, this trip isn't free. It will take about $2,400 for me to fly to Oaxaca, sleep, eat, and ensure that I make it back to the U.S. safely.

This is where you come in.

As a teacher, I will touch thousands of students' lives. Some of these students need special instruction so that they can join their peers in becoming leaders, producers, and creators right here in America.

Through your support, you touch the thousands of lives that I will teach.

Any gift will help me reach my goal; not just my goal of making it to Oaxaca, but my primary goal of making sure that every student has the resources to learn.

My experience in Oaxaca will last ten days, but the knowledge that I gain from this experience will last me for a lifetime and impact my students for years to come.

Please join me in making this experience possible!

Thank you so much for your support of me and my future students!
