Sunshine Sue

If you've ever sat and ate at the little back counter of Sunshine General Store in Sunshine, MD then you most probably were taken care of by Clara "SUE" Raynor.  She had been happily grilling up the best morning breakfasts, to-die-for bacon cheeseburgers and all kinds of take-out sandwiches for over 22 years.  It was service with a huge smile, efficiency and hospitality.  People would seek her out on their repeat visits.  Sue was the warm, familiar face that you looked forward to on your weekday morning commute or when you wanted to languish a tad bit longer on your weekend late breakfast.  She was as reliable as the rising sun.

That all changed in February 2018.  For her, it wasn't to see the sunny climates of Florida or do the great once in a lifetime adventure but it was because of her health.  Sue was losing her eyesight. She has now been declared legally blind.  Having your livelihood and the joy of seeing her "regulars" snatched so quickly would take a huge toll on anyone.  Sue is no exception.

Sue is currently being treated at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.  Her ophthalmologist there was shocked to find that Sue's primary care physician wasn't appropriately treating one of her other health issues, diabetes.  She was never prescribed medication even though it was necessary in her case.  (She is being treated for high blood pressure.)  The bad part is it isn't the diabetes that is causing the blindness, nor is it her cataracts,  both of which never stopped her from working. The blindness is from something they aren't able to diagnose.  So she sits in limbo, unable to work, unable to fully appreciate the beauty of her family (11 grandkids!) and many things life offers.

As to be expected, Sue's income has dwindled considerably.  At least she has Medicare but doesn't have any disability insurance.  Any donations you provide will help pay for her medical bills, prescription medications and living expenses.  She has always lived a very modest, limited lifestyle.  Going forward, we hope she will be able to manage, both mentally and financially.

Thank you.
