In 2016 HIV related stigmas and discrimination are the number ONE barrier to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.
Despite decades of advances in the treatment and prevention of HIV, an environment of ignorance and fear persists. It is within these environments where feelings of self doubt, shame, isolation and inadequacy rear their heads and disempower members of the PLHIV community.
Our mission is to combat all HIV related stigmas through the execution of education and awareness events. To dispel remaining myths that PLHIV are somehow less capable of living full, rich lives or are restricted by their "condition". We do this by undertaking and completing significant adventure challenges, by having fun along the way and in turn proving that living well with HIV is indeed possible.
For the next challenge: 12 HIV+ people and friends will walk the Hivsters, Cause we can Camino. An 8 day, 180km endurance hike from Portland (VIC) to Penola (SA). They will walk for up to 11 hours a day and deliver educational talks in the towns along the way.
The Hivsters: "HIV is not what it used to be. Treatments have changed and so should community preceptions. We are out to set the record straight and create awareness everywhere we go."
We aim to create hope and add value to the lives of those affected. It starts by creating small ripples, and in time the ripple effect in society will continue to grow. The Camino's we undertake are our shared paths to achieving that goal.
