</div>

</div>

</div>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>

</div>
<div>The history of western music seems to have overlooked the significance of the musical happenings at the Dresden Court during the first half of the eighteenth century under the reign of August the Strong and his son and successor Frederich August III. This oversight is remarkable considering that the reports of the time hailed the Saxon Hofkapelle in Dresden as the greatest orchestra in Europe demonstrating modern techniques and employing the greatest musicians sourced Europewide. JS Bach himself pleaded with the town council of Leipzig to consider the employment conditions at the Dresden Court which facilitated the finest orchestral playing in Europe. German musicians at the Dresden Court were sent abroad to study foreign musical styles, resulting in the innovative ‘mixed taste’ for which Dresden was famed. Not only was Dresden at the cutting edge of inter-cultural transmission, it was a centre of religious tolerance. Still today, the Frauenkirche and Katholische Hofkirche stand side by side in equal prominence in the old city centre of Dresden.

<div>Details of the research project.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The primary purpose of this research project is to understand the use of the bassoon in the orchestral repertoire of the first half of the eighteenth century. At the end of last year, I completed a research masters degree ‘Forgotten Fagotte? The Bassoon in the Early Symphonies of Mozart, Haydn and Contemporaries in the 1760s and 1770s’ which proved the extensive use of the bassoon in the bass group of early classical symphonies, despite the word 'bassoon' not actually being written on the musical scores. In the eighteenth century, the instrumentation of the bass group was rarely listed, the generic term ‘basso’ was used. According to the Bärenreiter Urtext edition the <em>Neue Mozart Ausgabe</em>, the word 'basso' meant cellos and basses, eliminating the bassoon from early classical orchestra. My research found multiple evidence of bassoons playing col basso in the primary source material. The next step of this research is to explore the primary source material from the first half of the eighteenth century to learn if <em>fagotto col basso</em> was equally important in the high baroque. I have relocated from Perth, Western Australia to Dresden, Germany to study the Saxon <em>Hofkapelle</em> as it was celebrated as the greatest orchestra in Europe between 1709–1756.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I am currently in the final months of a one year research scholarship at the Saxon State Library where the music manuscripts performed by the Saxon Hofkapelle are preserved and stored. I have uncovered findings vital to our understanding of the baroque basso group and the role of the bassoon in the eighteenth century. Already it is apparent that the surviving music scores are insufficient to inform performers about the instrumentation of the bass, the word basso is used in the score, this tells us nothing about instrumentation and size. The bass section of the baroque orchestra was in fact three bass sections in different locations throughout the ensemble and that the bass group was on average 35% of the whole orchestra. In the bass section were cellos, bassoons, basses, bass recorders, viola da gambas, theorboes, lutes and keyboard instruments. This is very different to what can be seen in many performances of baroque music today. There is much more work to be done. I have recently been offered a PhD place at the Hochschule für Musik Dresden, where I will continue my research/study under the supervision of Prof. Dr. phil. Habil. Michael Heinemann and A. Prof. Janice Stockigt.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The expected outcomes of this three year research project are:
</div>
<div>-	To understand the role of the bassoon as ripieno and solo instrument in the baroque period
</div>
<div>-	To discover who the bassoonists of the famed Saxon Hofkapelle were
</div>
<div>-	To learn what the generic term ‘basso’ meant in terms of the instrumentation of the bass group
</div>
<div>In the process of this research I also hope to champion the repertoire composed and performed by the Dresden musicians, mainly, that of Zelenka, Heinichen, Ristori, Hasse and Pisendel. It is remarkable repertoire which deserves a place in the canon. It is hoped that as a result of this research, modern editions of this repertoire will be created enabling easier accessibility for musicians and therefore audiences.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This research project is seeking financial support from a crowd funding campaign because the traditional sources of research funding are slowly evaporating. Due to the current economic crisis in Germany support for the arts and research is suddenly being withdrawn. I am calling on philanthropy to offer financial support for this important and unprecedented research.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>As a visiting researcher at SLUB, I have been in receipt of a monthly scholarship of €1, 500.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This amount has been sufficient to sustain my costs of living. I will supplement the €400 monthly difference (€1, 500 minus the €1,100 I will receive per month should this campaign be successful) with English language teaching in Australia online. My current visa status only permits me to work in Germany as a researcher.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In regards to how my financial situation impacts my visa. From 1994–2004 I lived as a European citizen (I have Australian and British citizenship) in Europe easily. Since Brexit, I am no longer a European citizen and must go through an immigration process. In 2024, I received a temporary residence permit for one year thanks to the scholarship and position at SLUB. This position and scholarship will end at the end of February 2025. I must prove to the German immigration department, that I have enough savings to support myself whilst doing the first year of my PhD.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>What exactly will your donation pay for?
</div>
<div>This sum will pay my living expenses for 12 months.
</div>
<div>My monthly costs, times 12 = €13, 200:
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Items
</div>
<div>Rent with heating	€ 490
</div>
<div>Electricity	€ 40
</div>
<div>Internet	€ 20
</div>
<div>Groceries	€ 410
</div>
<div>Public transport	€ 50
</div>
<div>Health insurance	€ 90
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Monthly total€ 1100
</div>
<div>Anual total €13, 200
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This research will make a significant impact on our understanding of how baroque music is to be performed and how it sounds. Imagine how different an orchestra would sound with a large bass group comprising a wide variety of instruments positioned on the left, right and centre of the ensemble. Bassoonists, imagine being included in the performance of baroque music for strings as well as to play with oboes. These compositions will sound more energetic with a strong rhythm and bass section, with a basso baroque surround sound system.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I am making a direct appeal to philanthropists and fans of the bassoon, baroque music, Zelenka, Hasse, Heinichen, Ristori and Pisendel. Support for this campaign will enable me to work tirelessly to carry out much needed research about historically informed performance practice, the Dresden Hofkapelle and the history of bassoonists and bassoon playing in the first half of the eighteenth century. Such intense research about the instrumentation of the eighteenth century bass group is unprecedented. Philanthropists and music lovers, help me to bring the music of the Dresden court to modern stages, and see Dresden flourish again as the Florence on the Elbe.
