Historical Marker Program - Trail Phase 2

Hello,

The mission of The Lafayette Trail is to document, map, and mark the footsteps of General Lafayette across the United States of America during his fourth and last visit in 1824-1825, promote awareness of General Lafayette's historical contributions to the founding of the United States of America, and increase mutual understanding between the peoples of France and the United States.

After a full year spent traveling the United States, more than 800 events in more than 320 cities and towns have been mapped out across 25 states and the District of Columbia. A mapping program is available online on the website of The Lafayette Trail www.thelafayettetrail.com.

Phase Two of The Lafayette Trail involves implementing a roadside historical marker program across the United States in partnership with the William G. Pomeroy Foundation and the American Friends of Lafayette to commemorate the legacy of Lafayette's visit to dozens of U.S. communities across the very same 25 states and D.C. This program would provide fully funded historical markers to the sites selected by the vetting process agreed to between The Lafayette Trail, the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, and The American Friends of Lafayette, and help dozens of communities preserve the very vibrant memory encapsulated in their town's history. It will also lay the groundwork for the bicentennial celebrations of Lafayette's tour in 2024.

Attached to this description is a video from the Consulate General of France in Boston featuring Mr. Julien Icher, a 25-year-old Frenchman, Founder and Executive Director of The Lafayette Trail, in his early efforts to develop the project a few weeks prior to being selected by the President of France to represent his country as part of the French Presidential Delegation during a three-day state visit to Washington D.C. from April 23rd to 25th, 2018 at the invitation of the executive branch of the federal government. You may also find a screenshot of the mapping program available on the trail website.

A core part of our operations, which is also the uniqueness of The Lafayette Trail,  is to establish a person-to-person contact with the historical societies and local representatives of the local communities on the trail and work with them through the application process. With the goal to alleviate financial stress on small communities comes the occasional need to do a fundraiser.

Our hope is that you will find this project worthwhile and consider supporting it going forward!

Let us know if you have any questions.
Thank you very much,
