HISTORIC 80 Saint Marks COVID relief drive

Everyone remembers television’s Radar O’Reilly from M*A*S*H and  the staged musical comedy “You're A Good Man Charlie Brown” .    A central character in both these extraordinary shows was Emmy Award Winner Gary Burghoff.  But did you know that Theatre 80 is where it all began for Gary?  “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” in which Burghoff played the lead role premiered at Theatre 80 and helped to launch Gary into a career that eventually led to Hollywood and Robert Altman’s classic award winning movie M*A*S*H,  followed by the television series of the same name.  And Theatre 80 was the starting point for all of this.  Here’s Gary Burghoff to tell you more.

Hi I’m Gary Burghoff.  The world is in turmoil right now.  Covid-19 has changed so many things.  And Theatre 80 is no exception.  We all must fight to bring normalcy back and to save those things we love from fading away.  Theatre 80 is precious to me as I’m sure it is to you.   It is in desperate need right now.  So please consider a donation to keep Theatre 80 alive so that it can continue to provide a guiding light to a new generation of actors as it did for me.  Please help with your generous investment today so that Theatre 80’s bright lights never dim.    Let your love for this theater be your legacy.

Thank you for your consideration and time.  This is Gary Burghoff.  Please stay safe and healthy and God Bless.

Historic 80 Saint Marks Place  has been a tourist destination with Theatre 80 Saint Marks, the William Barnacle Tavern and the Museum of the American Gangster for decades. Tourists from all over the United States and around the world have said that at 80 St Marks they found the New York City they came to see.  Few other places hold such history, authenticity and deep ties to the community.

We need your help to see us past the huge economic losses from the Covid shut down and the neglect of the arts from the Federal, State and City governments. Where most European nations offered financial assistance to the arts industry, we received no help when ordered to shut down. Rather, the State of New York continued to charge us hundreds and thousands of dollars in property tax.

We have installed, rebuilt and improved air exchange in the theater and tavern to now total over 22 tons of HVAC. We plan to also upgrade the air flow in the museum. Ordered to remove two thirds of our seats, with no compensation, in a city where seventy five theaters have closed in the past ten years before the covid crises, we redesigned the theater as a cabaret theater, knowing we can expect no help from government but must be a self-sufficient self-sustaining venue.

We know that everyone in the city is hurting right now, but we humbly ask that if you can help us with donations of any size, it will go a long way to keep Historic Theatre 80 alive.

Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated; Patrons ($500) and Sponsors ($1,000) and Angels ($5,000) will see their names immortalized on a lobby plaque to be unveiled later this year.

If you are unable to personally contribute please consider sharing this relief drive with your friends, colleagues and fellow patrons of the arts.

With gratitude and best wishes,
Genie & Lorcan Otway and the 80 St Marks family.
