You are invited to celebrate the 100th birthday party in 2030 for this historic pool and building! The Berkeley City Club Conservancy a 501(c)3 launched a Centennial Drive to restore this monumental community clubhouse. It came into being when 12 women's groups, having just gotten the vote and needing a place to meet, hired Julia Morgan to create spaces for their diverse interests.
The Berkeley City Club is on the National Register of Historic Places and a California and Berkeley landmark.
Now it houses a romantic public restaurant, a theatre, a ballroom for events, meeting venues, 44 historic hotel rooms and this beautiful tiled pool which is open to hotel guests and club members.
The building is a medieval fantasy of many architectural styles coalesced into providing an experience of European grandeur. It is an irreplaceable 46,000 square feet of cast in place reinforced concrete craftsmanship constructed at the same time as the Julia Morgan designed Heart Castle. Sometimes called "The Little Castle" for the detail similarities.
Shimmering leaded glass windows prevail in the public spaces and the Conservancy is restoring those in the pool one grouping at a time. It will take $35,000 to restore the first group of windows to the right in this photo and replace them with transparent safety glass in leaded diamonds as it was originally built.
This building is a significant place, open for public use and a beautiful example of exquisite design, careful craftsmanship and our United States architectural heritage.
