We at Momma's Hip Hop Kitchen are in full gratitude for the opportunity to have served our community for 6 years with the best possible women's hip hop concert. We have been able to serve several thousand people through producing a unique and empowering all women Hip Hop concert which includes free HIV/AIDS testing, access to hundreds of different community organizations and national artisans, and providing a safe space for artists to share their testimonies. Momma’s Hip Hop Kitchen, Vol. 8: Enough is Enough! will take place on Saturday March 7th, 2015 at the Hostos Center for Arts and Culture in the South Bronx.



Annually we shed light on different social issues. For Volume 8 this year we are bringing awareness to violence in our communities, especially violence against women. This year we continue to use hip-hop as our tool to educate the masses and build awareness around violence against women.

MHHK 2015, is an invitation to RISE, AWAKEN and BECOME.  We are calling for a paradigm shift in thinking and being for this year’s event. We will broaden the conversation from local and national governmental violence to the global oppression that has used the female body as a weapon of war for centuries. Women of all ages are being raped, assaulted, molested, abused (e.g. forced sterilization, breast ironing, female genital mutilation, prostitution, sex work, honor killings, acid throwing, trafficking, police brutality and femicide). Women have been enduring absurd amounts of pain with little to no healing outlets. There has been an invisible chokehold on women from Juarez to Chicago, Palestine to Puerto Rico, Africa to the South Bronx. We can’t breathe!!! We are calling all women and girls from around the globe to come back home and demand justice with their drums and their candles.

Enough is Enough MHHK, Vol 8: 2015 is a Response and Spiritual Call to Action to:

 RISE and awaken the Spirit of women and girls all over the world.
HEAL the mind, body and spirit of people of color from the impact of oppression.
BECOME that which we already are, fearless, courageous and powerful!

MHHK 2015 affirms that:

Enough is Enough! Girls will rise and speak up and against what threatens their sense of identity, safety, belonging, connection and love.

Who We Are:
Momma's Hip Hop Kitchen (MHHK) is a multifaceted hip hop event designed to showcase women artists, especially women of color. MHHK serves as a social justice community-organizing platform that educates and empowers women of color on issues that impact their lives, including HIV/AIDS and reproductive justice.

The History Behind It:
In 2007 Kathleen Adams and Lah Tere laid the foundation for MHHK as a response to the commercialism of hip hop by corporate America. As women of color they believe that women of color are in a state of emergency. Where the face of women in hip hop was a powerful emcee promoting self-respect and esteem, we are now bombarded with provocative, lustful images and we believe it is our responsibility to take this issue by force and re-establish what it means to be a woman in the culture of hip hop.




2008:
On February 16, 2008, the first MHHK, Vol. 1 took place at the O. Henry Learning Center in New York City. 2008 was inspired by focusing on the intersections of hip hop, reproductive justice, and HIV/AIDS in communities of color"”since women are often the topic of focus with these issues. Over 500 people attended MHHK, Vol. 1. MHHK, Vol. 1 was sponsored by The Pro-Choice Public Education Project (PEP) and Advocates for Youth. Our first host was Lynx "Supersize Spanish Fly" Garcia.


2009:
On March 7, 2009 the second annual MHHK Vol.2: Faith Feminism, and Hip Hop took place at Hostos Community College's Main Theater in the South Bronx. 2009 was inspired by how women use their faith to overcome obstacles in their lives. The event always touches upon the intersection of reproductive justice and HIV/AIDS in communities of color. Over 1,000 people attended MHHK, Vol. 2. MHHK Vol. 2 was sponsored by the Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture, Casa Atabex Ache, Advocates for Youth, Rebel Diaz Arts Collective, Vamos a la Pena del Bronx, and Trabajadoras por la Paz. Our hosts were Lucy Herrera and Daynara Marte.



2010:
On March 6, 2010 the third annual MHHK Vol.3: Back to Our Roots"“ Environmental Justice, Education Equality took place at Hostos Community College's Main Theater in the South Bronx. 2010 shed light and created awareness on Environmental Injustices and Educational Inequalities. The event always touches upon the intersection of reproductive justice and HIV/AIDS in communities of color. Over 1,000 peopled attended MHHK Vol. 3. Our hosts were Lucy Herrera and Lah Tere.




2011:
On March 5th, 2011 the fourth annual MHHK Vol.4: Let's Get Active! took place at Hostos Community College's Main theater in the South Bronx. 2011 initiated a dialogue to inspire action in supporting healthier nutrition, more physical activity, and increased community involvement among women and their families. The event always touches upon the intersection of reproductive justice and HIV/AIDS in communities of color. Over 1,000 peopled attended MHHK Vol. 4. Our host was Lah Tere.



2012:
On March 3rd, 2012 the fifth annual MHHK Vol. 5: Be the CURE! took place at Hostos Community Collge's Main Theater in the South Bronx. 2012 initiated a dialogue to inspire action in supporting healthier nutrition, more physical activity, while increasing community involvement among women and their families through the vibrant culture of hip- hop. The power of Hip Hop messaging was used as a tool to address and build awareness about both reproductive cancers (i.e. cervical, endometrial, ovarian, vaginal) and breast cancer which disproportionately affect communities of color. The event always touches upon the intersection of reproductive justice and HIV/AIDS in communities of color. Over 1,000 peopled attended MHHK Vol. 5. Our host was Lah Tere.


2013:
On March 2nd, 2013 the 6th annual MHHK Vol. 6: No Limits:Knowledge is Power! took place at the Hostos Center for Arts and Culture in the South Bronx in the Main Theater. Momma's Hip Hop Kitchen honored Hostos Community College's 45th year anniversary of excellence in higher education and cultural preservation by naming its Vol.6 annual all women hip-hop concert "No Limits:Knowledge is Power!" Our goal was to use hip-hop as a tool to address and build awareness around education. We advocated for smaller class sizes, the closing of the achievement gap between the rich and the poor and a comprehensive sexual education curriculum. We engaged community, through the power of Hip Hop to become more active in supporting organizations that are on the front-lines fighting for better educational opportunities. The event always touches upon the intersection of reproductive justice and HIV/AIDS in communities of color. Over 1,000 peopled attended MHHK Vol. 5. Our hosts were Nene Ali and Lah Tere.


2014


Momma's Hip Hop Kitchen, Vol. 7: Celebrating Sisterhood took place on Saturday March 1st, 2014 at the Hostos Center for Arts and Culture in the South Bronx, NY. 
Momma's Hip Hop Kitchen turned seven! We are moved, touched and inspired by all of the beautiful people near and far who have supported our vision and work over the years. Our annual all women hip-hop concert "Vol. 7: Celebrating Sisterhood" focused on the use of hip-hop as a tool to honor the accomplishments of women and build awareness around women in the arts.
The magic that happened before, during and after the events is transformational for many. We introduced the "7 Pillars of Sisterhood" to initiate dialogue about the actions needed in order to create and maintain strong sisterhood. The 7 pillars are LOVE, RESPECT, HONESTY, DISCIPLINE, COMPASSION, PATIENCE and PEACE. Thousands have witnessed these "7 Pillars of Sisterhood" in action on the stage year after year and we truly believe that it is the driving force behind our concerts. Too often the accomplishments of women are not celebrated and women are portrayed in a negative light. We ROSE UP and celebrated


7 years of edifying and uplifting our young and adult women through the power of the hip-hop culture.
