Hilinaʻiʻs Walk 2018- 

It was probably about 2am, when I felt my side of the bed push down as if someone sat down. It was my husband, he was crying. My heart sank as a slew of terrible thoughts raced through my head....was someone hurt? Did someone pass away? What’s wrong? He was quiet for a while, until he said...I have to get her there, I have to get Hili to Variety (school), and I’m gonna walk! I was a little confused, until he explained. He wanted to walk from his elementary school in Hau’ula to the one he wanted her at...in Diamond Head. He walked, and continues to walk to raise awareness and funds to get Hilina’i to Variety.

Back story: We struggled for years to find a positive learning environment for Hilina’i. At the time, she was pulling her teeth out and digging her arms until she bled, because she was frustrated and couldn’t communicate. Her neurologist told us about Variety school for special needs children, but when we researched it, we quickly realized it was way out of our reach, financially. We visited the school with Hili, and on her way out, she grabbed Tommy’s hand and told him, daddy...I love this school. (Clear as ever)

Hilina’i: to trust, rely on...God! For the last 7 years, we’ve put our trust in ke Akua to help us. With Him and with the help of family, friends and some financial aid, Hilina’i has benefited from all Variety has to offer! She stopped picking and pulling her teeth, instantly...and finally learned to communicate. Her healing and progress has been amazing!

Our heartfelt MAHALO, to each of you..who have shown her kindness, talked story with her and made her feel important. It takes a village, and we are so blessed that you are a part of our village.

Please pray for my hubby as he takes to the road again (37 miles) on Friday.
