<div>Am Abend des 17. August 2024 veränderte sich unser Leben schlagartig. Unser geliebter Martin, ein warmherziger Freund, Kollege, Schwager, Sohn, Bruder und mein Partner, wurde in der Düsseldorfer Innenstadt in einen schweren Straßenbahn-Unfall verwickelt. Martin hat nur knapp überlebt und kämpft nun seit mehr als vier Wochen auf der Intensivstation der Düsseldorfer Uniklinik um seine Genesung.

<div>Sein Weg zurück ist lang und steinig. Um ihm die Chance zu geben, irgendwann wieder in ein halbwegs normales Leben zurückzufinden, benötigt Martin eine intensive Reha, die von Spezialisten täglich betreut wird. Leider sind die wenigen verfügbaren Kliniken in Deutschland, die für seine Art von Verletzungen und Neurologischen Problemen geeignet sind, überlastet. Eine Alternative wäre eine private Behandlung, eventuell sogar im Ausland – doch diese Optionen sind enormen Kosten verbunden. Er ist jetzt seit vier Wochen auf der Intensivstation und benötigt dringend eine bessere Therapie.

<div>Gleichzeitig müssen wir uns den harten Realitäten stellen: Martins Zukunft ist ungewiss. Ob und wann er wieder arbeiten kann, steht in den Sternen. Die finanziellen Sorgen wachsen, da laufende Kosten wie Miete, Pflege, der wohl anstehende behindertengerechte Umbau unserer Wohnung und Lebensunterhalt gedeckt werden müssen.

<div>On the evening of August 17, 2024, our lives changed forever. Our beloved Martin – a kind-hearted friend, colleague, brother-in-law, brother, son, and my partner &amp; love – was involved in a serious tram accident in downtown Düsseldorf. Martin barely survived and has now been fighting for his life for over four weeks in the intensive care unit at Düsseldorf University Hospital.

<div>The road ahead is long and difficult. For Martin to have a chance at regaining some sense of normalcy, he urgently needs specialized rehabilitation, which requires intensive medical care. Unfortunately, the few clinics in Germany capable of treating his type of injury (including brain damage) are at full capacity. The only option left is private care (potential out of Germany) – but the costs are overwhelming for us.

<div>At the same time, we’re facing an uncertain future. It’s unclear when, or if, Martin will be ever able to return to work. The financial strain is mounting as everyday expenses like rent, care, and living costs continue to add up.

<div>Martin has always been a person full of joy and generosity, always ready to help others. Now he needs our help.
