<div>Im November 2025 machte unsere damals noch acht Jahre alte Tochter Lea beim Sport Purzelbäume. Plötzlich kam sie weinend zu ihrem Vater und ihre linke Gesichtshälfte hing gelähmt herab. Wir fuhren sofort in die Medizinische Hochschule Hannover. Lea bekam abends ein Notfall-MRT und wir nach einer Nacht ohne Schlaf am nächsten Tag die absolute <strong>Schockdiagnose: DIPG.</strong>

<div>Diese Arztgespräche und die Aufnahme auf die Kinderonkologie werden wir wohl nie vergessen. <strong>DIPG ist ein hochaggressiver, kindlicher Hirntumor im Hirnstamm. </strong>Diese Krankheit verändert einfach alles; was früher wichtig schien, wird plötzlich völlig nichtig und umgekehrt. Spiritualität und die Suche nach Sinn gewinnen an Bedeutung. Und auch nach 11 Monaten Krankheit geben wir weder die Hoffnung auf, noch werden wir aufhören, um unser großes Wunder zu kämpfen.

<div><strong>Unser Leben steht still</strong>
</div>
<div>Die Gefühle von uns Eltern, unserer Familie und Leas Freunden in der vergangenen Zeit sind kaum in Worte zu fassen. Lea musste nach der Diagnose sofort operiert werden. Es folgten 6 Wochen Strahlentherapie in Kombination mit einer Chemotherapie – über Weihnachten, in einer anderen Stadt. Es tat uns unendlich leid und war herzzerreißend schwer, unsere bis dahin vollkommen gesunde und lebensfrohe Tochter aus ihrem Alltag gerissen zu sehen. Sie musste unter den schweren Therapien, den körperlichen Einschränkungen und nicht zuletzt auch unter dem schmerzhaften Verlust von Freundschaften leiden. Es kostet uns bis heute alle Kraft, die wir haben, sie in jeder Phase dieser ungerechten Krankheit zu begleiten.

<div>Wir beide mussten als Eltern aufhören zu arbeiten. Einerseits, um Lea und ihren Bruder rund um die Uhr zu betreuen und trotz aller Umstände zu versuchen, jeden Tag zum schönsten ihres Lebens zu machen.
</div>
<div>Andererseits erfordern die Suche nach der besten Therapie und die ständige Auseinandersetzung mit der Krankenkasse all unsere Zeit. Wenn das eigene Kind plötzlich pflegebedürftig wird, jeder Tag zählt und die Organisation der Therapien die letzte Kraft raubt, ist an einen normalen Arbeitsalltag nicht zu denken. Der Verdienstausfall und die hohen Therapiekosten weit über 100.000€ setzen uns massiv unter finanziellen Druck.<strong> </strong>Die Hürden des Lebens kommen uns zeitweise unendlich hoch vor.

<div><strong>Ein ständiges Auf und Ab</strong>
</div>
<div>Aufgrund der Seltenheit der Erkrankung (es erkranken nur ca. 20–25 Kinder pro Jahr in Deutschland) haben wir weltweit führende Experten kontaktiert. Wir schafften es, in eine Medikamentenstudie in Zürich aufgenommen zu werden. Leider hat das Studienmedikament bei Lea nicht angeschlagen. Im April entwickelte sie zunächst eine Metastase, die ihr zunehmend extrem starke Kopfschmerzen bereitete (das Volumen verdoppelte sich innerhalb von nur ca. 3 Wochen). Nach der operativen Entfernung im August, die mit einem Krankenhausaufenthalt und einem Aufenthalt auf der Intensivstation verbunden war, erfuhren wir, dass auch der ursprüngliche Tumor im Hirnstamm weiter gewachsen ist. Eine notfallmäßige Rebestrahlung (weitere Bestrahlungen sind medizinisch ohne irreversible Schäden nicht mehr möglich) rettete ihr im August gerade noch einmal das Leben und schenkt uns nun ein kleines, aber unglaublich wichtiges Zeitfenster für weitere Therapien.

<div><strong>Unsere letzte Hoffnung: Eine neue Immuntherapie</strong>
</div>
<div>Unsere beständige Recherche führte uns über einen australischen Wissenschaftler zu einer Impfstofffirma in Kanada. Diese Firma hat komplett neu entwickelte und perfekt auf Leas Tumormarker abgestimmte Impfstoffe entwickelt. Diese werden im Rahmen einer komplexen Immuntherapie und unter der Leitung eines speziell für Leas Fall renommierten Arztes an ein Zentrum in Köln verschifft und uns dort angeboten. Diese komplette Therapie, inklusive weiterer spezieller Medikamente wie ONC201, wird uns weit über 100.000 Euro kosten. Da es für diesen extrem seltenen Tumor kaum evidenzbasierte Studien an Kindern gibt, wird die Krankenkasse diese Kosten keinesfalls übernehmen. Wir setzen jedoch unsere allergrößte Hoffnung in diese Therapie. Wir wollen unsere geliebte Tochter bei uns behalten, wir wollen sie aufwachsen sehen, zusammen das Leben entdecken und gemeinsame Momente erleben, die mittlerweile unendlich kostbar für uns geworden sind.

<div><strong>Wer ist unser Engel Lea?</strong>
</div>
<div>Unser Engel Lea ist ein Mensch reinen Herzens. Sie ist wunderschön, ohne Wert darauf zu legen, sehr sensibel für Zwischenmenschliches und eher zurückhaltend. Jedoch stets gut gelaunt und voller Ideen. Vor ihrer Diagnose liebte sie die Bewegung, turnte in unserem Garten und auf dem Trampolin. Besonders das Schwimmen und Reiten hatten es ihr angetan. Sie bastelt und häkelt unheimlich gern und verliert sich dabei am liebsten in ihren Geschichten. Doch noch mehr als das liebt sie Tiere und die Natur.

<div>Was Lea in dieser ganzen Zeit seit November selbst fühlt? Das ist selbst für uns schwer zu sagen. Sie ist unglaublich anpassungsfähig und trägt ihr Schicksal mit einer Gelassenheit, von der sich wohl jeder Erwachsene etwas abschauen könnte. Natürlich hatte sie oft Angst vor Therapien, aber sie hadert nicht mit dem Schicksal. An guten Tagen blüht sie richtig auf – dann sehen wir ihre Lebenslust, ihren Witz und all das, was sie zu diesem Engel macht, den wir kennen und sooo sehr lieben.

<div>Wenn man sie nach ihren Wünschen für die Zukunft fragt? Sie sagt nicht, dass sie selbst gesund werden möchte. Sie sagt, sie wünscht sich, dass alle Menschen und Tiere gesund sind, niemand sterben muss und alle, die gestorben sind, wieder lebendig werden. Ihr großer Traum für die Zukunft ist es, einen Gnadenhof in der Natur Österreichs zu haben und Tiere zu retten.

<div><strong>Diagnosis DIPG</strong>
</div>
<div>Where do you even begin when trying to describe every parent’s worst nightmare? Probably with the diagnosis ...
</div>

</div>
<div>In November 2025, our daughter Lea, who was only eight years old at the time, was doing somersaults during sports. Suddenly, she came crying to her father, and the left side of her face was paralyzed and drooping. We immediately drove to Hannover Medical School. That evening, Lea underwent an emergency MRI, and after a sleepless night, we received the devastating diagnosis the following day: <strong>DIPG</strong>.

</div>
<div>We will probably never forget the conversations with the doctors or being admitted to the pediatric oncology ward. <strong>DIPG is a highly aggressive brain tumor that occurs in children and is located in the brainstem. </strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We are no longer the same people we were before. This disease changes absolutely everything. Things that once seemed important suddenly become completely insignificant, and vice versa. Spirituality and the search for meaning have become increasingly important to us. And even after 11 months of living with this disease, we have not given up hope, nor will we ever stop fighting for our greatest miracle.

<div><strong>Our lives have come to a standstill</strong>
</div>
<div>It is almost impossible to put into words what we, as parents, our family, and Lea’s friends have felt over these past months.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Immediately after her diagnosis, Lea had to undergo surgery. This was followed by six weeks of radiation therapy combined with chemotherapy – over Christmas and in another city. It broke our hearts to see our daughter, who until then had been completely healthy and full of life, suddenly torn away from her everyday world.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>She has had to endure the harsh treatments, physical limitations, and, not least, the painful loss of friendships. To this day, it takes every ounce of strength we have to stand by her and support her through every stage of this cruel and unfair disease.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>As parents, both of us had to stop working. On the one hand, we need to care for Lea and her brother around the clock and, despite everything, try to make every day the most beautiful day possible for them. On the other hand, searching for the best possible treatment and constantly dealing with the health insurance company takes up all of our time.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>When your own child suddenly requires constant care, when every single day counts, and when organizing treatments drains the very last of your strength, maintaining a normal working life is simply impossible. This has now placed us under enormous additional financial pressure. At times, the obstacles life has placed in our path feel impossibly high.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>A constant roller coaster</strong>
</div>
<div>Because this disease is so rare – only around 20–25 children are diagnosed with it each year in Germany – we contacted leading experts around the world. We managed to get Lea accepted into a clinical drug trial in Zurich.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Unfortunately, the trial medication did not work for Lea. In April, she developed a metastasis that caused increasingly severe headaches. Its volume doubled within only about three weeks.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>After the metastasis was surgically removed in August – requiring hospitalization and a stay in intensive care – we learned that the original tumor in her brainstem had also continued to grow.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Emergency re-irradiation in August – further radiation treatments are no longer medically possible without causing irreversible damage – just barely saved her life once again. It has now given us a small but incredibly important window of time to pursue further treatment options.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Our last hope: A new immunotherapy</strong>
</div>
<div>Our relentless research eventually led us, through an Australian scientist, to a vaccine company in Canada. This company has developed completely new vaccines specifically tailored to Lea’s individual tumor markers.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>As part of a complex immunotherapy treatment, these vaccines will be shipped to a medical center in Cologne, where the treatment will be administered under the supervision of a renowned physician specializing in Lea’s particular case.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The complete treatment, including additional specialized medications such as ONC201, will cost us well over €100,000. Because this tumor is extremely rare and there are hardly any evidence-based studies involving children, our health insurance will not cover these costs.
</div>
<div>Yet this treatment is where we place our greatest hope.
</div>
<div>We want to keep our beloved daughter with us. We want to watch her grow up, discover life together, and share all those moments that have become infinitely precious to us.
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>Who is our angel Lea?</strong>
</div>
<div>Our angel Lea is a person with the purest of hearts. She is beautiful without caring about her appearance, deeply sensitive to the feelings of others, and rather reserved. Yet she is always cheerful and full of ideas.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Before her diagnosis, she loved being active, doing gymnastics in our garden and jumping on the trampoline. She especially loved swimming and horseback riding. She loves arts and crafts and crocheting and can happily lose herself in her own stories for hours. But more than anything, she loves animals and nature.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>What does Lea herself feel about everything that has happened since November? Even for us, that is difficult to say. She is incredibly adaptable and carries her fate with a calmness and acceptance that many adults could learn from. Of course, she has often been afraid of the treatments, but she does not rail against her fate.
</div>
<div>On good days, she truly blossoms – and then we see her joy for life, her sense of humor, and everything that makes her the angel we know and love sooo very much.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>And when you ask her what she wishes for the future? She does not say that she wants to get better herself. She says she wishes for all people and animals to be healthy, for no one to have to die, and for everyone who has died to come back to life.
</div>
<div>Her greatest dream for the future is to have an animal sanctuary surrounded by nature in Austria, where she can rescue animals.
</div>
