Higher Education for Hum

Dear Friends,

This letter has been very difficult for me to write. My foundation to become the person who I am has been built on the basic principle of hard work. I learned at a young age that I had to work for what I wanted because no one was going to hand it to me; this letter is not out of desperation, but rather out of humility.

In May, I will transfer from Napa Valley College with a GPA of 3.96. I’ve been accepted at UCLA, UC Davis, UC Irvine, and Cal Berkeley for Civil Engineering in the fall of 2018. Unfortunately, due to my immigration status, I am not eligible for loans, grants, or scholarships.

My immigration status is a story you’ve heard before; however, only the people closest to my heart have heard about my vision, so I’d like to share that with you. My ultimate goal or the thought that fills my spirit is innovation.

Over these last few years, I’ve slowly been evolving as most college students do, but along with my evolvement, a silent level of confidence has also emerged. I’ve become confident in my ability to learn even though the increasingly difficult subject matter presents more demanding challenges. During this time, I have been accepted into various honor societies, I’ve led multiple study groups, I’ve tutored classmates free of charge, and I’ve also volunteered at numerous school events, all while working to pay for my school and living expenses. At thirty-two years of age, this opportunity will not go to waste.

Time and time again, hard work and my never quit attitude have proven to me that anything can be achieved if I am willing to do the work. I wasn’t where I am today six years ago; in fact, I barely graduated high school and struggled badly with math, reading, and comprehension, but I’m here now. So why can’t I be a leader in innovation? I know in my heart that someday I will make a new discovery in my field. If I’m willing to live and breathe what I love to do, there’s nothing that can stop me, for I have learned to confront all my fears.  I believe it’s the only manner in which we truly grow.

This is the humility part of the letter. The universities have advised me that private investors are my only hope, so I am asking you to help me in the next phase of my life. I promise you that your contribution to my education is one that I will someday pay forward to my community and to other young passionate scholars who wish to pursue a university education. Thank you for your consideration.

With gratitude,
