Highbridge Green Black Panther Trip

We are raising money for the 8th grade students at The Highbridge Green School  to see The Black Panther movie. The population of students at the school is 99% youth of color. The Highbridge Green School is a Title I school located in the Highbridge Section of the South Bronx, in which 99% of students receive free lunch. Thus, many students do not have the resources to see the film with their families.

This year the 8th grade students have been exploring issues of inequality and race in their ELA, social studies, and science classes. Students recently learned about the evolution of skin color and wrote letters to people in different industries advocating for representation or equality; some students wrote to the media and film industry advocating for increased representation in film.

We believe that every child in our 8th grade class should have the opportunity to relate to characters onscreen, and witness the first mega-budget movie that not only has an African-American director but also a predominantly Black cast. As the article "The Revolutionary Power Of Black Panther" in Time Magazine explains, "making movies about black lives is part of showing that they matter." Any support would be appreciated so that we can take our entire 8th grade class to experience this important film.
