Hello! My name is Maggie Fleischer and I am raising money to attend the CIEE Leadership and Service in Public Health program in the Dominican Republic this summer. I am a junior at the Academy of Information Technology and Engineering (AITE) in Stamford, CT, interested in pursuing a career in nursing. This program will provide me with some of the skills I will need as a nurse. It will help me learn about the needs of a community and how to provide support. I will learn about various initiatives that can be taken to promote public health and how to work with others to do so, as well as connecting with people who may be different from me.
This program excites me because I have always loved to travel and experience geographical and cultural diversity. Every place I go to is different and I learn something new. I have never been to Santiago de Los Caballeros, Dominican Republic and I am looking forward to being immersed in Caribbean traditions and the Spanish language. Connecting with people is important to me, so learning about the lived experiences and cultures of my homestay family and classmates in the program will help fulfill my personal goal to make lifelong friends with people from across the United States and the world. After sharing this amazing experience together, when I return home, I will be able to share my experience with my community to foster empathy and understanding of different cultures and communities.
This opportunity is amazing, but it comes at a cost. Although I already received a partial scholarship, I am trying to fundraise to help offset the remaining cost of the program and flight. I am currently working as a soccer referee and babysitter to put some of my own money towards funding this experience, and my parents are financing it as well, but I need your help.
