On Sunday, August 9, 2020, Jorge Rodriguez, a Latino man, was followed and then violently attacked by a white man making racist and xenophobic statements. Jorge is an immigrant from Honduras, and a hardworking foreman for a construction business. Jorge received some medical attention, but will need eye surgery, as well as a mechanic for his vehicle, which was damaged in the attack.
Jorge Rodriguez was at the Hover Crossing liquor store drive-through when a couple in an apple red Chevrolet Silverado behind him began to honk their horn and shout insults. The couple followed Rodriguez out of the parking lot and immediately cut Rodriguez off, blocking him from continuing towards Tulip Street and 18th Street, near Garden Acres Park. A white male exited the truck and walked towards Rodriguez in a rage.
The white male pulled Rodriguez from his vehicle and began punching him in the face. The woman in the assailant’s vehicle, who was visibly pregnant, attempted to shield Rodriguez with her body while pleading with the white male to stop hitting the victim. She also pleaded for herself, yelling “I’m pregnant,” but the assailant continued to brutally beat the victim. During the assault, the assailant yelled at Rodriguez, “get out of our country.” To add insult to Jorge’s assault, two white female bystanders walking in Garden Acres Park told Rodriguez to leave and stop causing problems, saying “this country is not your home.”
Rodriguez, disoriented from the assault, drove to a nearby friend’s house, where the friend called the Longmont police. Jorge received initial medical attention, but urgently needs follow-up. Jorge lost vision and light perception in his eye due to the attack, and thus will need an important surgery. Additionally, Jorge had to forcefully slam on his brakes to avoid hitting the assailant’s vehicle when the assailant cut him off. Because of the forceful car maneuver, his truck will now not start. Due to his injuries, Jorge is unable to work right now and needs help covering basic costs.
