Help!

Over Gert-Jan;

Zenuwpijnen in gezicht

Behandeling in Amerika

https://aviv-clinics.com/disease/long-covid-syndrome/

Totale kosten: 80.000 euro

De kosten van de behandeling zijn hoog. Inclusief verblijfskosten gedurende vier maanden in Florida (nabij Orlando) komen we uit op totaal 80.000 euro.

Aangepaste vliegen

Hulp heel hard nodig!

Adviezen opgevolgd zonder resultaat

Vooronderzoeken

Medische beoordeling door artsen, neuropsycholoog, fysiotherapeut,

fysioloog.

Cognitieve testen:

Uitgebreid bloedonderzoek;

Hart- en longprestatietest (CPET);

MRI scan en SPECT scan.

Hyperbare zuurstoftherapie (HBOT);

60 sessies verdeeld over 12 weken, twee uur per dag.

Gert-Jan's life has been at a standstill for 5 years. Help!

Gert-Jan has been in bed for five years due to the disease ME/CFS and POTS, giving him a very low quality of life. Now that there is a new promising treatment in America, which is not covered by health insurance, he hopes to get his life back with your help!

About Gert-Jan;

Gert-Jan is 60 years young and has been an active, caring man all his life. Father of a blended family, who did everything for his six children and his wife and worked hard as an IT person at a school community. (Carmel College Foundation)

All energy suddenly gone

From one day to the other, he could no longer walk and had no energy. Gert-Jan suffered from brain fog and suddenly could not tolerate stimuli such as light, sound and even touch. Talking cost him too much energy and communication was often limited to thumbs up or thumbs down. Gert-Jan could no longer do anything at all.

Nerve pains in face

In addition, he had excruciating facial nerve pain. This turned out to be the condition TN (Trigeminal Neuralgia). Fortunately he was able to undergo surgery. The hope that with this all complaints would disappear went up in smoke when he did not recover and his complaints only got worse. He was only relieved of the unbearable pain in his face.

Just lying down

After many examinations, he was found to be suffering from ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) and POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome). Because of POTS, he could only lie down. A care unit came up behind the house with a hoist and shower stretcher. Gert-Jan had to be completely cared for and nursed. He lay in a dark room for years.

How is it now

Because of the struggle with the UWV and WMO, his condition did not get better and he has been in the news a lot. As you may have seen. Due to new medications for POTS and Ephipora therapy, his condition has improved somewhat. As a result, he can tolerate stimuli a little better and has a little energy to occasionally be out of bed with the wheelchair (in reclining position) for an hour and go out on our wheelchair bus. This is only possible on good days and for a few hours a day. The rest of the time he is in bed and sleeps a lot.

Huge impact on family

The improvement through medication and therapy stagnated and stuck at no more than about ten percent of before his illness. This life also has a huge impact on the whole family. Unfortunately, no recovery is possible and there are no treatments in the Netherlands for these conditions.

Complaints that Gert-Jan experiences daily are: muscle weakness, exercise intolerance, palpitations, brain fog, forgetfulness, headaches, food sensitivity, concentration problems, extremely high heart rates, disruption of stimulus processing and much more.

No chance of a cure in the Netherlands

For a long time we have been searching daily for possibilities and possible treatments. Unfortunately without result because after numerous medical examinations, many treatments and visits to specialists, the chance of a cure does not seem to exist in the Netherlands.

Treatment in America

But there is suddenly new hope: a treatment in America! A science-based study shows that this treatment is very successful in several conditions such as Long COVID and CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome as ME is called in the US). We have done a lot of research on this treatment, contacted former patients and talked to the doctor there.

Gradually we became more and more enthusiastic and the idea began to emerge that Gert-Jan would be able to recover. Something that was completely out of the question with his illness. The results of the treatment are very good and the approach with extensive medical research beforehand is unfortunately not to be found in Europe.

Four months in America

During the first 2 weeks, Gert-Jan will be fully examined by, among other things, MRI and SPECT scans of the brain. Based on these examinations, an individual program will be composed after which a 12-week course of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) will start. In total, the course lasts 4 months.

With this treatment, the brain is stimulated to restore lost functions. In addition, new blood vessels are created so that the lack of oxygen in damaged tissue is eliminated. The goal is to restore and stimulate the dysregulated systems in the brain. In addition, a personalized neuro-rehabilitation program is also initiated during treatment.

More information about the treatment can be found on the Aviv-clinics website. The protocol is almost identical to that of the LongCovid, and is tailored to the individual.

https://aviv-clinics.com/disease/long-covid-syndrome/

Total cost: 80,000 euros

The cost of treatment is high. Including accommodation costs for four months in Florida (near Orlando), we arrive at a total of 80,000 euros.

Custom flying

Because Gert-Jan has to lie flat mainly due to POTS, a modified flight is needed. Rental housing must be sought near the clinic. Housing prices in this area of the U.S. are higher in the (summer) period than in the months of December through April. The East is mostly wintered by Americans, to which landlords respond. In addition, someone obviously needs to go with Gert-Jan to take care of him and accompany him with flight, transfer, transportation to the clinic and daily care.

Help very much needed!

Gert-Jan's life has stood still for 5 years.

23 hours a day in bed is no life!

We want to seize this opportunity with both hands.

For this we really need your help.

Will you help us to make sure that Gert-Jan can go to America?

Every donation and sharing of this message is greatly appreciated.

Every contribution, big or small, brings us closer to our goal.

We hope that thanks to your contributions he will soon be able to start his rehabilitation program in America.

Thank you very much!

What is POTS:

POTS stands for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome and can simply be explained as a disruption of brainstem functions. As a result, all automatic processes and functions of organs are dysregulated. These include breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, temperature regulation, metabolism, immune response, stimulus processing, walking, etc.

Brainstem

Normally, the brainstem senses a change in your body position and then adjusts heart rate and blood pressure accordingly. Adjusting both components accordingly keeps enough blood and oxygen in your body and brain. You don't have to do anything for this and it is completely automatic.

Blood stays in legs and feet

With Gert-Jan, this control is completely dysregulated. This means that when he stands up, his blood stays mainly in his legs and feet and thus less blood flows to his brain than it should.

This reduced blood supply to the brain was measured in Gert-Jan, via a tilt table test on a tilt of only 20%, out of 32%. Due to this extreme value the test was immediately aborted, normally the values are also measured in standing position, but with this first result it was clear.(In healthy persons it is between 6-8%).

Always that action (Stress) mode

And let it be precisely the brain that controls everything in our existence. From thinking, concentrating, keeping balance to regulating your blood pressure and heart rate during exertion. But also being able to 'switch off' again after an activity. The well-known 'fulfilled' feeling after a sports session or a project that has been completed. This system is also dysregulated in Gert-Jan, causing his body to enter or remain in action mode more quickly.

Too little oxygenated blood

Before we had the diagnosis and figured out for ourselves what was taxing, Gert-Jan continued on character more often than not. And the feeling he experienced then was like being drunk without alcohol involved. Simply because the brain does not get enough oxygenated blood.He became dizzy, spoke with double tongue, moved sluggishly and clumsily, did not fall asleep and most of all had a huge hangover (PEM).

PEM stands for Post-Exertional Malaise. Or aggravation of symptoms after physical, cognitive or emotional exertion. So his limit is reached much faster in a vertical activity and if he ignores it, it manifests itself afterwards in getting sick(er).

Advice followed without result

Once you start googling or talking to doctors about treatment options for POTS, you pretty quickly stumble upon advice like; start drinking more water, increase salt intake and use compression stockings. Needless to say, he followed the advice. But without lasting results and improvement in quality of life. In addition, people say: go exercise and do physio, however, because of the ME disorder this works counterproductive. With PEM as a result. ME experts strongly advise against this.

Never give up

But what do you do when almost nothing is possible anymore, you have followed all the available advice, looked up all the information about the disorders and do everything you can to get better. But the end result is that you get worse by the week? Above all, don't give up and search until a treatment is found!!!

So he began his search and has been in contact with renowned researchers, doctors and practitioners from all over the world. Although there are no scientifically proven medications or therapies for ME, we tried various supplements and medications in consultation with my treating professor. With varying degrees of success and, unfortunately, resulting in only a few percent gain.

What does treatment in America look like?

Pure oxygen in a pressurized cabin

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment in which a patient is given 100% oxygen through a mask or hood in a room with increased pressure. As the patient inhales pressurized oxygen in the pressurized cabin, more oxygen will dissolve in the blood

In addition, new blood vessels are created, eliminating the lack of oxygen in damaged tissue. By varying the air pressure in the cabin in combination with pure oxygen, production of new stem cells is activated. The brain is thus stimulated to restore failed functions.

During this session, the brain is simultaneously stimulated with a customized neuroprogram in the form of braing games on an Ipad.

Everything is based on the measurements taken at the start of the program.

This complete therapy includes:

Preliminary examinations

Medical assessment by physicians, neuropsychologist, physical therapist,

physiologist.

Cognitive testing:

Comprehensive blood tests;

Cardiac and pulmonary performance test (CPET);

MRI scan and SPECT scan.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT);

60 sessions over 12 weeks, two hours per day.

Neuroplasticity training; this is cognitive training via a tablet during the HBOT sessions. This creates new connections in the brain and trains memory, concentration and processing speed.

After the last treatment, comprehensive examinations will again be done to discuss the results. After 6 months, there will be an after-measurement in the clinic.
