Herd Heroes Haiti fundraiser

Tax deductible
The rural poor in Haiti do not want charity; they want a job and a market for what they produce. Herd Heroes is trying to differentiate from the many other charities in Haiti by using our expertise to help rural Haitian farmers help themselves and start sustainable small businesses. We help them improve their productivity and sell their products to local school nutrition programs which would otherwise use imported sources of protein.

Although Haiti hosts more aid organizations per capita than any other country in the world, it remains the poorest country in the western hemisphere.  While much of the aid to Haiti is well-intentioned, it often fails to take into account existing human capital and the need to sustain local markets to prevent a culture of dependency.  Herd Heroes aims to help local economies thrive, rather than rely on handouts.

In rural communities in Haiti, livestock farming is one of the few professions for which there are suitable environmental conditions and adequate available resources.  Nevertheless, access to animal health care and innovative approaches to improving livestock productivity is limited.  Our organization is based on linking U.S. veterinarians and business experts with rural Haitian communities.

All of the Herd Heroes founders work full-time in pharmaceutical R&D and provide veterinary assistance and business training in Haiti on a volunteer basis.  Our project goals in Haiti are accomplished through donations from generous individuals who want to help make a difference in Haiti by contributing to an organization which promotes self-reliance and sustainability, rather than a cycle of dependence.  All donated funds are used to purchase veterinary supplies and equipment, build animal health field stations, and pay local Haitian workers.

The animal health field stations are durable, multi-use structures with rainwater capture capability, and cost approximately $8500 to build.  Salaries for Haitian project managers and community animal health workers, animal feed and medications, and animal transport costs approximately $18,000/year.
