Help Young Mom Fight Breast Cancer

Help Allison and Alex Grow Up With Their Mommy

My wife, Amy, is a bright, funny, and amazing woman in her early 40s. We have been married since 2005, and have 2 young children Allison (9) and Alex (6).  Our lives were forever changed on December 1, 2017, when she was diagnosed with Stage 3c inflammatory breast cancer. Inflammatory breast cancer is rare, accounting for only 1 to 5 percent of all breast cancers diagnosed in the United States, and does not typically have as good of prognosis as “normal” breast cancer.

Prior to her diagnosis, Amy worked full time as an outpatient orthopedic physical therapist and Pilates instructor. She has been unable to return to work in any capacity since her diagnosis. Given the physical nature of her job, which would also necessitate working in close physical contact with patients while in an immunocompromised state, Amy’s ability to work will be significantly limited during treatment.  She will first undergo 20 weeks of chemotherapy. After a brief “rest” period, she will undergo a mastectomy (likely bilateral) and lymph node dissection. Following recovery from surgery, she will then require daily radiation for 5-6 weeks.  This 10-month time frame does not include any time needed for likely hysterectomy or for reconstruction.

Amy is the primary income producer in our family, and she is the policy holder of our entire family’s health insurance. We have already made significant adjustments to our finances, such as eliminating non-essential purchases, withdrawing both kids from their afterschool program, utilizing family members as caregivers, discontinuing contributions to retirement plans, and discontinuing contributions to our emergency savings account.  Even after taking all these actions, Amy’s inability to work over the next 10+ months will have a devastating impact on our family’s ability to maintain financial solvency and will be a source of great stress to both Amy and me.

A contribution of any amount will help tremendously, be appreciated more than you know, and allow our family to focus on supporting Amy during her treatment and recovery in hopes of achieving the best possible outcome. Any funds raised will be used solely for:

·         Medical costs

·         Unavoidable monthly expenses such as mortgage, groceries, utilities

·         Summer child care
