Help the children of Ufanisi center

‘’...when hearing about this kind fundraising, I’m seeing light ahead. We’ve been living in darkness..'' - Isaiah Lugara

Although the name may make it seem bigger, The Ufanisi centre in the Korogocho slum in Kenya is not more than an iron sheet shack, the inside walls decorated with educational posters. Together with dedicated volunteers, Isaiah strives to provide the children with food, education and personal growth, but most of all: stability and a future.

This small but impressive initiative is the work of one man: Isaiah Luyara. For almost a decade he has dedicated his life to feeding, educating and accommodating the local orphans and children who are left behind. Together with dedicated volunteers, Isaiah strives to provide the children with food, education and personal growth, but most of all: stability and a future. This project is a good example of how a community can empower themselves. The commitment of one man, Isaiah, to make a difference and to fight for basic human rights is inspiring.

However, the plot of the school has been sold by the owner, the structures are being demolishwed and Isaiah together with 70 children are being evicted. They have to buy a new plot to build a new school and need your help!

What is Ufanisi centre?
The Ufanisi However, the past years, Ufanisi has grown to become more than just a feeding program.

Nowadays Isaiah and his volunteers teach 70 kids English, Math and Geography, providing a safe and warm home, 6 days a week. The name says it all: Ufanisi means prosperity in Swahili and as Isaiah says: ''(...) even though we live in harsh conditions, we believe that through Ufanisi centre, these children will be able to prosper when they grow up''. These children will be the future of Kenya and deserve a fruitful environment to develop and grow their potential.

Isaiah is the man who dedicated himself to helping these children. An honest, well respected man within his community who felt he could not sit back any longer. He tells how he could not witness drained and washed out street children anymore, low on energy due to the lack of food. More than money, we want him to feel supported in his cause.

Why donate?
☞  We have to move fast! Ufanisi center is being brought down this week and the children will be on the streets again.

☞ Invest in the future of Kenya! This is a sustainable charity: helping local good doers to improve their own society as they see fit. These are not volunteers sent from abroad, but devoted individuals from the same slum. It really exemplifies that progress is not always brought by foreign initiatives!

☞ This is not a large foreign NGO where money is wasted on bureaucracy, This is a community run project, well respected within the Korogocho slum: without locks or guards, the place has always been communally protected & highly appreciated.

☞ The saying every penny counts has never been more true than for the Ufanisi centre. An example: for €35 we can buy rice to feed 80 children for a month.

☞ Donations are not only monetary gain, but serve to give Isaiah and his volunteers encouragement that they are not alone.

Where will your donation go to?
The plot of the Ufanisi school has been sold, the center is brought down this week, the children are evicted and the structures are demolished. Isaiah and his volunteers, together with 70 children need at least 3000 Euro to buy a new plot and build the basics for a school (however, anything above is extremely welcome to buy food and clothing). With this, we can secure the future of this initiative for the next decades.

Who are we? Two Dutchies who have been working and living in Nairobi, Kenya. Living here has made us critical on charities, and sceptical about their achievements. However, after both visiting Ufanisi centre, this particular project truly touched our hearts. We believe that community driven initiatives such as this one make an example of how you can take measures in own hands.
