Help The Walrus

*PLEASE READ THE LATEST UPDATE*

On June 7th, 2018,  we grabbed this precious boy from death row at a rural Louisiana animal control.  We knew he was heartworm positive, but believed we could find an adopter that would either finance it or that we could help raise funds for.  While there is some interest in him, his forever person hasn't been found yet.  The heartworms and the costs of his care, however, are still around.

We are trying to gather funds to aid in his treatment and continued foster care until his person is found.  This turned into a much longer, difficult, and more expensive process than we anticipated.  If there are any monies in excess of his costs, they will be donated to a local shelter.

He is on a couple medications and of course needs food and treats. He's also had a few vet visits that, while subsidized by the kindness of some of the doctors at Magazine Street Animal Clinic, were paid for out-of-pocket.  He has also had some behavioral issues surface that required the consultation of a trainer that specializes in such.  Gallivan Burwell from Upward Dog Training & Counseling provided pivotal guidance and advice, at a discount, to help bring out the sweet dog that Wally really is.

Initially, he was a bit shell shocked after we pulled him from the animal control. His personality started surfacing more and more with his first foster mom and we really got to know the real Walrus.  We learned that he has trust issues with most people due to whatever happened in his past. Once he warms up to you, he gets really sweet and goofy.

He loves a meandering walk around the neighborhood or City Park.  When he gets real happy, he does this wiggly dance on his back that is absolutely adorable!  Sitting on the couch with you or hanging on the porch watching the world are amongst his favorite pastimes.  If you give this boy a squeaky toy, he's enthralled for the afternoon.

His ongoing monthly expenses are:

Food & Treats   $45
Meds  $80
---------------
$125

The out-of-pocket expenses thus far:

Tumor Removal  $225
Tumor Histopath $260
Vet visit  $160
Training Consultation $100
---------------
$745

At the moment, we have begun the Doxycycline (antibiotic) portion of the heartworm treatment. We have gathered a few estimates for the remainder of the process (he'll need three injections).  We're also contacting animal welfare groups to obtain funding for his treatment.  If he can get subsidized or free care, the funds allocated for heartworms will be donated to said group. If we fund heartworm treatment out-of-pocket, the cost will be $500.

Since we can't predict when his forever home will surface, we want to budget three months of expenses. Hopefully, his person/people will show up before that. If that is the case, we will use those funds to make sure his new home is properly prepared for him and/or donate the excess.

Thanks to everyone for your help!
