Hi! My name is Karen Gearns and this is my good friend Regina Wilburn, with her three beautiful children Madison (25), Peyton (20), and Tristan (15), and Peyton’s girlfriend Sarah. Regina and I have been friends for nearly 15 years teaching high school together for 12 of those years. In April, Regina was diagnosed with Stage 2 lobular carcinoma (breast cancer). This type of breast cancer does not respond well to chemotherapy, so she will begin her treatment with a double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery next week. After four to six weeks recovery, she will have five months of chemotherapy followed by another period of recovery and six weeks of radiation.
Regina is a single mom and the SOLE support of her family. She is helping her two oldest children with college while working on her Phd. In addition to teaching full time at Starkweather Academy, Regina teaches two classes each semester at Oakland Community College. She also teaches summer school in Plymouth-Canton and in the summer Kids on Campus program at Schoolcraft College. During treatment, Regina’s will not be able to work those three jobs, and her income will be greatly reduced. On top of that, she will have added costs from medical bills and medical supplies. Regina is an only child with no family in the area. Her mom, who is battling her own medical issues, lives out of state.
Gina is always generous with her time in service to others. She has given so much to our community and the youth in the Plymouth-Canton schools. As sponsor of our school Key Club, she spends every Friday lunch period with her students looking for ways to give back to the community. Along with her students, she rings bells for the Salvation Army, collects Toys for Tots, organizes scholarship fundraisers, participates in charity walks, and volunteers at the SJ5K.
