Hello,
I am initiating this campaign for my elder sister - Shilpa Desai - who has been fighting metastatic cancer for the past 3 years.
In May 2015, she started to notice blood in her urine. After consulting with doctors, followed by certain tests, bladder cancer (grade 4) was detected along with some malignant traces in her right breast. In her first line treatment, she received two sets of chemotherapy followed by surgery involving removal of left kidney, ureter & small portion of bladder plus some affected portion of right breast. Post surgery she went through radiation therapy. Total treatment cost was more than 10 lakhs rupees i.e. $15,000.
In June 2017, during regular checkup again some 'shadows' were observed in the x-rays. Chests CT scan confirmed some traces of tumor in both the lungs. Biopsy reports showed small cell cancer had activated in both lungs. Cancer type was same as before and hence she had to go through chemotherapy again. Now after 6 cycles of chemotherapy, post PET scan tumor still exists in right lung . During treatment, she was hospitalized twice for 8-10 days due to adverse effects of chemo medicines and had gone through critical stages. Till date we have spent more than 6 lakhs rupees i.e. ~$9000 on conventional chemotherapy.
As per oncologists, conventional chemotherapy alone is not enough and doctors have prescribed her immunotherapy to tackle this critical stage of cancer and to prevent relapses. This immunotherapy is advanced technology where her immune system will be prepared to fight against the cancer cells. Since we do not have much options available, we have to go for immunotherapy to save her life. These immunotherapy medicines are very expensive. Estimated treatment cost for this therapy is approximately 18 to 20 lakhs rupees i.e $30,779.
All her family members are doing their best to help her stand strong and overcome this illness. She has been a very good fighter so far and we are hoping to see her back to routine life where she can spend quality time with her kids.
As our financial reserves are depleting due to the prohibitive costs incurred so far, I am initiating this fundraising effort as suggested by friends.
