Help Shawna get back up and running

Donation protected

On August 27th, Shawna Moy Lewis had a run in with some pretty bad luck and is in desperate need of financial assistance... you see, "what had happened was" she was out walking her dog Eleanor when the dog pulled her off balance while on a hill, causing her to fall and break her right ankle in three places.  At face value, this doesn't seem all that tragic.  We didn't think so either..... that is until we got to the Emergency Room to find out that the break was what they call an "unstable break" requiring surgery in order for her to walk again.

Again, not abnormal so far..... except that we then learned that it would require two surgeries.  The first surgery, which occurred the next afternoon, was completed and Shawna went home (to my home) the following day with a lovely new metal cage built around her leg to keep it from moving while waiting for the swelling do diminish.  Once the swelling has gone down enough to complete the second permanent hardware placement surgery, she will then begin the long road to recovery which could take up to 12-14 months.  Her second surgery is scheduled to be completed on the morning of September 7th at Wake Med. (and we are praying that it goes well with no complications).  Shawna has been struggling between the pain of the first surgery and the anxiety of the looming second surgery all while trying to learn how to walk again without the use of her right leg.

So, now for the really tragic part of the whole story.  SHAWNA IS GOING THROUGH ALL OF THIS WITHOUT INSURANCE!  The back story about all of that is that she recently moved back to NC and had completed her first (and only) day of work at her new job when this accident happened.  Her benefits with that new job do not kick in until October 1 (of course) so she is going to have to pay out of pocket for all of this!  So, not only is she incurring a huge amount of debt with this whole ordeal, but she also currently has zero money coming in.  Now, if this were a situation of Shawna just being lazy or throwing herself a pity party, then I promise you would not be seeing this Go Fund Me plea for help...but truthfully, her situation is quite dire.  You see, she is out of work for at least the next 2 weeks to possibly another a month (which is one top of already having been out for 2 weeks now).  Even when she returns to work, it will have to be part time due to her working in retail where she will be on her feet (or in this case foot) for her entire shift.

We have fingers crossed that she is able to make it back to work in that timeline, but she is far from being self sufficient. Currently, she is unable to drive, unable to walk, unable to really care for herself on a day to day basis.  She also has the unfortunate situation of not being able to care for her dog Eleanor (who is currently being cared for by another wonderful friend of ours).  Oh, and did I mention, SHE LIVES IN A THIRD FLOOR APARTMENT?!

So, for the near future, Shawna will be living with myself and my family while we care for her and help her along physically.  The financial part of this situation is where we need your help! Shawna has plans to move into a first floor apartment at the end of October, so until then, she's stuck with us.... but we need to make sure that she still has an apartment to move to.  She still needs to be able to pay her rent, utilities, personal expenses, oh and THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN MEDICAL BILLS.    Any monetary donation would be greatly appreciated to take a little of the anxiety out of her life at this point.  If we can give her a little piece of mind to help her through the next few months, I'm sure she will have a easier recovery period!  Please find it in your heart to help Shawna through this rough point in her life.
