The tragedy of frigatebirds in French Guiana

Ciao a tutti, mi chiamo Manrico Sebastiano, un ricercatore che lavora al Museo Nazionale di Storia Naturale di Parigi, in Francia, e ho bisogno del vostro aiuto per studiare e salvare questo speciale uccello marino!
__________Hi, my name is Manrico Sebastiano, a researcher working at the National Museum of Natural History of  Paris, and I need your help to study and save this special seabird!

La fregata magnifica (Fregata magnificens) che nidifica su una piccola isola della Guiana francese (Sud America), ogni anno subisce gravi epidemie di una malattia associata all'herpesvirus. La maggior parte dei pulcini mostra segni clinici gravi (come nella figura sottostante) e muoiono in poche settimane, il che riduce significativamente il successo riproduttivo annuale della popolazione.
__________Magnificent frigatebirds (Fregata magnificens) from a small island in French Guiana (South America), experiences serious outbreaks of a herpesvirus-associated disease every year. Most chicks showing clinical signs die from a terrible disease in a few weeks (as in the picture below), which significantly reduces the annual reproductive success of the population.
Nel nostro precedente progetto di ricerca, abbiamo trovato alte concentrazioni di mercurio, un elemento chimico tossico, sia in uccelli adulti che pulcini. Il mercurio è utilizzato nell'estrazione di particelle d'oro dal suolo. In breve, il mercurio viene utilizzato per recuperare minuscoli pezzi d'oro che si mescolano nel terreno e nei sedimenti. Il mercurio e l'oro si depositano e si combinano insieme per formare un'amalgama. Nella figura qui sotto, il mercurio (grigio e liquido) ha inglobato le particelle d'oro. L'oro verrà estratto vaporizzando il mercurio. Come si capisce da questa immagine, molto mercurio viene usato per estrarre una piccola quantità d'oro.
__________In our previous research, high levels of mercury, a toxic trace element, were found in adult and chick frigatebirds. Mercury is used in artisanal small-scale gold mining to extract gold from soil. Briefly, mercury is used to recover tiny pieces of gold that are mixed into the soil and sediment. The mercury and gold combine together to form an amalgam. In the figure below, the mercury (gray and liquid) has incorporated the gold particles. Gold will be extracted by vaporizing mercury. As you can tell from this image, a lot of mercury is used to extract a small amount of gold.

La Guyana francese sta documentando un drammatico aumento della contaminazione da mercurio. Ciò solleva l'importante questione se il mercurio sia uno dei fattori che promuovono lo sviluppo di segni clinici negli animali selvatici esposti a ceppi virali.
__________French Guiana is one of the regions that is experiencing a dramatic increases of mercury contamination. This raises the important question of whether mercury is one of the factors promoting the development of clinical signs in wild animals exposed to viral strains.

Abbiamo ipotizzato che l'esposizione al mercurio abbia un effetto negativo sull'investimento parentale dei genitori, che potrebbe rappresentare la ragione principale della comparsa di segni clinici in questa popolazione.
__________We hypothesised that mercury exposure negatively impacts on parental investment, which may represent the main reason for the occurrence of clinical signs in this population.

Crediamo che gli adulti esposti ad una concentrazione di mercurio più elevata i) forniscono meno cure parentali, nutrendo i loro piccoli con meno cibo del necessario, e ii) abbandonano i pulcini prima, rendendoli più suscettibili alla malattia.
__________We believe that adult birds with a higher mercury load i) provide less parental care, and feed their chick with less food than required, and ii) abandon the chick earlier, making them more susceptible to the disease.

Per poter indagare su questa ipotesi, il nostro team di ricercatori dovrà acquistare costose apparecchiature (sistemi di localizzazione GPS specifici per uccelli). La nostra campagna di raccolta fondi ha quindi l'obiettivo di raccogliere circa 14000 euro entro Ottobre 2021 per coprire questo ambizioso progetto di conservazione.
__________To be able to investigate this hypothesis, our research team will need to buy costly equipment (GPS tracking devices specific for birds). Our fundraising campaign has therefore the goal of raising approximately 14,000€ to cover this ambitious conservation project by October 2021.

Se riuscissimo a raccogliere più dell'intero importo, potremmo visitare le colonie limitrofe di fregate per capire quanto rapidamente il virus si stia diffondendo. Altrimenti, lo studio sarà comunque eseguito utilizzando meno risorse.
__________If we can raise more than the full amount, we will be able to visit neighboring frigatebird colonies to understsand how rapidly the virus is spreading. Otherwise, the study will still be done using fewer resources.

Qualora fossimo in grado di dimostrare che la contaminazione da mercurio ha contribuito all'insorgenza della malattia, forniremo queste prove alle autorità locali per attuare misure restrittive riguardanti l'emissione di mercurio nella Guyana francese.
__________If we will be able to demonstrate that mercury contamination were contributing to the outbreaks of disease, our goal is to provide these evidence to local authorities to implement restrictive measures concerning the emission of mercury in French Guiana.

- Le fregate hanno l'apertura alare più grande di tutti gli uccelli rispetto alle dimensioni del corpo. Possono trascorrere intere settimane in aria senza toccare terra, e persino dormire in volo.
__________- Frigatebirds have the largest wingspan of all birds compared to the body size. They can spend entire weeks in the air without touching ground, and even sleep while soaring.

- Le fregate usano le termiche ascensionali (correnti di aria calda che sale verso l'alto) per farsi trasportare sopra i 4.000 metri di altezza (sotto lo zero termico) per poi planare per centinaia di km senza sbattere le ali.
__________- Frigatebirds use acrensional thermals (warm air currents rising upwards) to glide above 4,000 meters (below zero temperatures) to then glide for hundreds of km without flapping their wings.

- Pur essendo uccelli marini, le loro piume non sono impermeabili. Per questo motivo non possono atterrare sull'oceano. Se lo facessero, nella maggior parte dei casi affogherebbero.
__________- Although being seabirds, their feathers aren’t waterproof. Because of this, they can’t land on the ocean. If they would land on the ocean, they would eventually drown.

- Le fregate hanno il periodo più lungo di cure parentale di qualsiasi altro uccello. Può volerci più di un anno intero prima che il pulcino sia completamente indipendente.
__________- Frigatebirds have the longest period of parental care of any bird. It can take more than one full year until the chick is fully independent.

- Le fregate sono protette e classificate come "endangered" ("minacciate") nella lista rossa della Guyana francese.
__________-  Frigatebirds are protected and classified as "endangered" in the red-list of French Guiana.

- Il nome deriva da imbarcazioni veloci, maneggevoli ed efficaci usate tra il XVI e il XIX secolo. Le fregate sono costruite per la velocità e, la loro coda biforcuta gli dona un enorme maneggevolezza in volo.
__________- The name frigatebirds arise from fast, maneuverable, and effective vessels used between the 16th and 19th centuries. The frigatebird is built for speed and, thanks to their forked tail, they can maneuver easily in the air.

__________- Frigatebirds practice kleptoparasitism, a form of feeding in which they chase other birds and pull their tails until they drop or regurgitate their prey, which they steal.
