Help Nathalie

Allow us to introduce ourselves.
My name is Rebecca, I have been working for charities for over 12 years and I am currently based in Togo, West Africa. My friend Rachel, based in Worcestershire, has recently survived breast cancer. We have been friends since we were five years old.
Rachel and I would like to save someone’s life. Will you help us?
Let us tell you the story so far; Nathalie is a 37 year old woman living in a small village called Gobé in Northern Togo. She is married to Yossou and they have three children. About nine months ago Nathalie found a lump in her left breast. Where she lives, they don’t have breast clinics and they don’t do mammograms. Where she lives if someone is sick they pray. Despite the prayers the lump got bigger and bigger and she felt sicker and sicker. Yossou managed to find the money (11 pounds) to bring her on the 8 hour journey to Lomé, Togo’s capital, by taxi.
They arrived in Lomé one month ago only to find the hospital workers were on strike. They waited one month until she had the biopsy while living in a tiny house on the outskirts of Lomé. I met Nathalie for the first time in March. She was sitting on the floor in dark room looking weak. I could see the lump through her T-shirt and it was huge. Despite this she was smiling and putting on a brave face.
She got the biopsy results back a couple of days later. Unfortunately she has cancer.
Togo is one of the poorest countries in the world and I see so many people in need every day. What touched me about Nathalie’s story is that she is the same age as my dear friend Rachel who has just survived cancer. I called Rachel up immediately and we both agreed that we need to help this woman.
When Rachel was diagnosed 6 months ago she received free top quality health care thanks to the NHS. In Togo, you have to pay for your health care. If you don’t have the money you die. Yossou returned to the village shortly after her diagnosis, to ask for help from his neighbours but no one has anything to give. Most people there work as subsistence farmers. The family are desperate now.
We do not know if it will work nor if Nathalie will survive but we want to try.
Nathalie has now had her first chemo, it was Tuesday 19th May. She is due to have another two, followed by a mastectomy and radiotherapy, which she will need to go to Ghana for. We are determined to get Nathalie through the treatment programme, and are committed to helping her as much as possible.
Thank you for listening
Rebecca and Rachel.
