Help us save sharks

Hi!

I´m Martina Alvarez, environmental journalist, professional diver and shark conservationist.

I am starting this gofundme, so that I can finish my documentary to create awareness about the need and importance of sharks in Panama.

“We can’t protect what we don’t know” sharks are disappearing from the ocean, and there are no regulations to protect them here in Panama. That is why we need to tell the other side of the story and explain why we need them to survive as a species.

Sharks are the main indicator of a healthy ocean. They regulate the food chain. If sharks disappear, this order disappears, too. Unfortunately, Panama has no regulations to protect sharks, and they are being fished without control.

Authorities say there is no fishing directed to sharks, but there is no control over the non-direct fisheries either. This also means there is no control over how many sharks are brought into a harbor or sold in a market.

When visiting the seafood market in Panama City early in the morning, you may find it full of baby hammerhead shark body trunks. This is a big problem as sharks have a slow and late breeding age, and they don't get to have many pups ( babies).

Moreover, consumers generally don't know when they are eating sharks. At the restaurants, it is sold by the name of “cazón,” which means “baby shark,” but few people know it. What is more, it is sold at most local markets as “ceviche of the day,” but no one knows they are really eating sharks.

Sharks are the animals with the worst reputation on the planet. We have created an unfair image for them, and they are suffering for it. Movies and media have implanted fear in society, making it really difficult to protect them.

This documentary will also be used by organizations like Twin Oceans Research & Sharks Defenders ( which are being interviewed in the documentary) to educate and explain the problem that the disappearance of sharks is causing to the ocean.

We have already filmed everything we need, and the funds raised will be used for post-production. This means image editing, color, music and sound, media and education. We want this documentary to be exhibited in different places and proyected as much as possible to ensure the message gets to the world.

Soy Martina, periodista ambiental y buceadora profesional.

“Se necesita conocer para proteger: y es por eso que estoy haciendo este gofundme para poder terminar mi documental con el objetivo de crear conciencia sobre la necesidad de los tiburones en Panamá.

El tiburón es el principal indicador de un océano sano, regula toda la cadena alimenticia y si ellos desaparecen este orden desaparece también. Lamentablemente en Panamá no hay ninguna ley que los proteja directamente y se los está sacando del mar sin ningún tipo de control.

Las autoridades suelen decir que no hay pesca dirigida a los tiburones, pero no hay ningún control sobre la pesca no dirigida, esto quiere decir que nadie controla cuántos tiburones se trae a un puerto o se venden en el mercado.

Cuando uno visita el mercado de mariscos en Ciudad de Panamá bien temprano a la ma;ana, puede encontrar a como está lleno de troncos de tiburón martillo bebés, esto es un gran problema ya que el tiburón tiene una edad de reproduccion lenta y tardía y tampoco llegan a tener muchas crías.

Además, existe una gran ignorancia por parte del consumidor en cuanto a cuando esta consumiendo tiburón. En los restaurantes se lo suele vender bajo el nombre de cazon, lo que significa tiburón bebe pero muy poca gente realmente sabe lo que es esto. Como si esto fuera poco, se lo vende en la mayoría de los mercados locales como “ceviche del dia” pero nadie sabe que eso que están comiendo es tiburón.

Creo que la única razón por la que hay una oferta es porque hay una demanda, y necesitamos generar conciencia e informar para cambiar esto.

El tiburón es, a mi entender, el animal con peor reputación del planeta, le hemos construido una fama injusta y está sufriendo mucho por esto, el temor que han inculcado los medios y las películas hace que sea muy difícil poder protegerlos.

Por eso necesitamos contar la otra cara de la historia, y explicarle al mundo porque necesitamos leyes para protegerlos.

La idea al crear este documental es tambien que sea utilizado por organizaciones como Sharks Defenders (quienes son entrevistados en la película) para educar y explicar la problemática sobre la desaparición de los tiburones en el océano.

Ya hemos filmado todo lo que necesitamos, los fondos que nos hacen falta son para post-producción, esto significa edición de imagen, color, creación de música y sonido, prensa y educación. Queremos que el documental se muestre en distintos lugares y sea visto cuantas veces sea posible, para asegurarnos de que este mensaje llegue al mundo.
