This is my Aunt Margaret:
Margaret is a free lance professional singer and voice teacher. She sings with the Chicago Symphony Chorus, she sings at a local church, and she inspires middle and high school students every day by teaching "voice and life." Margaret is also back in school working toward a new career in Health Information Management. (This fall she will be taking three different diagnostic coding classes for a total of nine credits!)
Life threw Margaret for a loop in May when she was diagnosed with a rare form of breast cancer called Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma. After many tests and much deliberation, she decided to take an aggressive surgical approach, and had a bilateral (double) mastectomy on August 2. Surgeons also removed two sentinel lymph nodes. The decision paid off. All the pathology has come back with clear margins, and she is now cancer free!
That's the great news. The story doesn't end there, though. Margaret's recovery is just underway, and the reconstruction phase will take a number of months. Because of this, she will need to reduce her teaching load, and perhaps some singing work. The lowered income, in addition to tuition costs and the many medical bills, will be quite challenging. So we're setting up this page to help her out. The money will be used for necessities and living expenses, and will also help with the medical expenses. Although she has insurance, the out of pocket costs are still high.
