Family devastated #DadHadAStroke!

Hi, My name is Patsy. I am a 55 year old lady who lives in Newmarket, ON, Canada.  I've decided to start this GoFundMe campaign because I was once in the same position that Lisa is now. I once almost lost my home due to my own personal illness.  If it wasn't for outside help, who knows where I'd be today.

As many of you can imagine putting yourself out to the public about private family affairs can be a very difficult issue to deal with.  It’s taken me over a month to convince Lisa Platt that WE are a town that’s a community and communities/friends help each other when needed.

On December 29, 2017 Lisa and her family’s world turn upside down. Her husband – Peter Cobb had a stroke. He’s recovering, SLOWLY and they have no idea when, if ever he will recover completely. At the moment he is considered “non-verbal”.

They have 3 sons. All live at home. Peter & Lisa have been together for 28 years.  Peter was the sole bread winner and financial guru of the household. Lisa’s job was looking after the home and children.  WHAT A SHOCK to have to learn how to pay bills, where to pay bills, who gets what, etc. having never dealt with the financial part of their household. Not to mention because Peter’s considered non-verbal and has brain damage she cannot get power of medical attorney so she cannot make any changes to mortgage and other major financial decisions.

SADLY, Peter had no Short Term Disability.  Long Term Disability doesn’t kick in until June 2018.  Lisa doesn’t want a handout and agreeing to have me create this go fund me page has been heart wrenching but she’s finally realized that without community/friends’ help they WILL LOSE THEIR HOME!  What a society we live in.  IF THEY were renting she could get assistance from a few government programs but because they OWN their home no one will help.

WHY DOESN’T LISA GO GET A JOB?  There are a few issues. She had an accident herself approximately 6 years ago in March and suffers many other medical issues herself because of it. She’s a dedicated wife and has been spending every day at the hospital. This also adds to daily expenses they never had. Parking at $15/day, gas to/from, takeout food at the hospital, etc.  She has limited mobility (walks with a cane). At the end of the day even if she could work Peter wants her at the hospital and she’s got 3 kids and 2 dogs and a household to run.  Lisa does sell Doterra Oils along with her hand-made bracelets for some supplemental income and continues to do so. She’s a hard worker and has a lot of compassion to help others. In fact, Lisa’s told me on numerous occasions that when this nightmare is all over she will be making it a mission to help others out, in the future, who may find themselves stuck in the same situation.

As you can all imagine, it’s absolutely ridiculous what it costs to run a household nowadays.  Lisa and I sat down and quickly figured out her current expenses which didn’t even include things like clothing, hair cuts, unexpected expenses of any kind (for example her garage door broke only 2 days after Peter was in the hospital and her car’s had to go in twice for repairs – we didn’t even include these figures in our expense list) and even she was shocked at what her husband had needed to keep their home going.  When it rains, it pours! I've made a goal of $40,000 to allow Lisa and her sons to keep their home. And let's not forget about medical expenses down the road should/if Peter make it home.

So, in conclusion, any help you can give to get Lisa, Peter, Sean, Josh & Bren through this difficult unexpected turn in their lives until June when their family’s LTD kicks in would be greatly appreciated.  Lisa's aware that lifestyle changes are necessary. Peter's LTD is only 64% of his income. Your generosity, empathy and willingness to make things better will not go unnoticed by the Platt-Cobb family.
