Help Kevin Beat Leukemia!

For the past 2 years, Kevin has been studying communications and journalism at UNC Wilmington. He loves being at the beach and when he isn’t in school or working his part time job, he enjoys playing on intramural sports teams at school and hanging out with friends.

In July, Kevin noticed some strange symptoms in his body. He had lip/jaw numbness, muscle pain in his arms and legs, heart palpitations, swollen lymph nodes and shortness of breath…. to name a few.

He went to his primary care doctor, immediate care, an ENT, cardiologist, oral surgeon, and a neurosurgeon. No doctor could diagnose his symptoms. Each doctor had a different answer, and all seemed to think it was of little concern.

Each sleepless night of worry and pain led him to continue in his pursuit for answers. As we prayed fervently for answers and healing, God stepped in right on time.

Kevin would have been in Wilmington had the hurricane not evacuated his home and school. Thankfully, he was home on Monday, September 17, when he began hurting in his chest and was unable to catch his breath while lying on his right side. He and his parents went to the emergency room in Wilson to get help. FINALLY, a PA there found a mass near his lungs and noticed that his right lung was partially collapsed. He was immediately transferred to Wake Med. Many tests including a biopsy, CT scan, and extensive MRI were done. The results of these tests were alarming, and he was transferred to Chapel Hill to the NC Cancer Hospital. Based on a PET scan, bone marrow biopsy and lumbar puncture, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

As you can imagine, for any 20-year-old and his family, the news seemed unreal and devastating. He’s not suppose to have cancer, he’s suppose to be planning and preparing for the rest of his life--NOT fighting for it.

Kevin began chemotherapy on Saturday September 26, his first round of many. He’ll be in the hospital for the next 4 weeks undergoing grueling treatments, as they aggressively try to cure him of this disease. After the 4 weeks, he’ll have 6-8 months of traveling back to Chapel Hill 2-3 times per week for more treatments and then he’ll enter a 3-5 year maintenance phase.

This will be a long road to recovery! Day by day, God gives him and his family small miracles and so much strength. They are trusting in His plan and know He will work all of this for Kevin’s good.

No one knows what all this will cost, but everyone can agree that he or his family should not struggle with the worry of the upcoming medical bills, lost wages, travel expenses and all the costs that come along with the road ahead. We should be the community of support for Kevin and his family during this journey. Let’s join together in uplifting them.

We can do this in 3 ways:
1) Support the “Help Kevin Beat Leukemia!” Go Fund Me
2) Share the Go Fund Me page on your social media outlets.
3) And Most Importantly, PRAY!!!

Any support that you can give Kevin and his family will be much appreciated. Every thought, prayer, positive vibe and contribution (big or small) will help Kevin and his family stay strong!

We serve a GREAT BIG GOD who, through us, can bless this family in their darkest hour!
