In May 2017, Janie was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Janie had endured the pain and discomfort of previously undiagnosed (despite countless complaints to her doctor for many years) stage 4 (the most severe) endometriosis for most of her life, and had just completed laparoscopic surgery to remove the disease. Her cancer was found as a result of this surgery and came as a complete shock to everyone, including the operating surgeon.
Everyone who knows Janie knows that she has always strongly desired to have children, so her oncologist's recommendation for a full hysterectomy followed by chemotherapy was absolutely devastating. After an unsuccessful attempt to harvest eggs, Janie and her husband Matthew are now facing the stark realization that surrogacy or adoption may be the only way to have children.
After only a little over 2 years of marriage, the events over the last few months have been a nightmare come true for Janie. What was supposed to be one of the happiest times of her life, while trying to start a family with her husband and buying their very first home just one week before her diagnosis, has instead rapidly turned into one of the most challenging times she's ever faced. Janie and Matthew have already begun to look into surrogacy and adoption and to familiarize themselves with the options and the processes involved.
The last few months have also brought great financial challenges with the associated costs and Janie being unable to work for over three months and counting. She just found out that she is two weeks short of qualifying for employment insurance sickness benefits.
