I’ve recently been awarded my first artist fellowship!
July 7 - July 13, at Mildred’s Lane in New York, I will soon be practicing the very special art of paying attention with a fantastic roster of artists.* Funding the experience is my biggest challenge, but I had a great idea. What if I offer photographic prints as a trade for your donations? Problem solved!
My most recent project - offered here - are photographs of spring blooms at night. These were captured at Indigo Farms in the Carolinas, USA, where the beautiful Bellamy family has farmed for 7 generations.
You will receive: Two prints for every $50 donation; one print for every $30 donation. All are archival c-prints that are signed, dated, and shipped vis USPS insured mail. The edition of each print is 50. You will also get a handwritten letter from me in the post from the residency.
Of course, a donation as little as $5.00 helps! :) For every donation up to $30 you will get a handwritten postcard in the post.
Having never been able to afford this sort of thing, I never apply. This one, though, I couldn't pass up. It's about paying attention. And the metaphysical. And each other -- basically what I care about the most in my own work and investigations. I mean, LOOK at this place:
What will the money go towards? Tuition is $1000, getting there and back by car, plane, and train is hefty, as well as help taking a week off of work.

ABOUT ME: I am an artist, writer, curator, designer, activist, and educator. With an MFA from NYC’s Hunter College, I returned to my Georgia roots in 2010 and live in a crooked house on a hilltop in Winterville - 9 miles from the cultural hub of Athens, Georgia. I teach Art Appreciation at Athens Tech, Craft Inc. for tweens and Superhero Camp at Treehouse Kid & Craft, and the Teen Studio Program at Georgia Museum of Art. ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP: In this week-long session, indiscreet associates of The Order of the Third Bird will continue their investigations into experimental protocols of Practical Aesthesis and methods of Sustained Attention. The Attention Lab is part guerrilla seminar and part meditative and kinetic practicum. A discipline of the senses is pursued. Temporary metempsychosis can occur, but must not become permanent. Topics for the session will include an investigation into the ethics and politics of attention in relation to works of art; witnessing, presence and vigilance, the vibrancy of the material, the entanglement of humans and nonhumans and the agency of objects will be be examined alongside experiences of awareness, perception, noticing, and realization. Beginning with available traditions and protocols of the Order, the group's aim will be to develop and test new experimental practices of attention.
