My name is Desiree Tick. I am 60 years old and I have been battling hepatitis C since 1987, caused by a blood transfusion.
I have had three chemotherapy treatments for this, and all have failed. The first one in 2002 was Interferon & Ribavarin for 42 weeks. The medical bills were quite large even though some were covered by insurance. The next time was in 2008 for nine weeks (should have been 16 weeks). I had an extreme reaction and had to stop. Then last year, from April to mid-August, I received Sovaldi & Ribavarin which also failed.
As tests were being done, the doctors found I had HCC – hepatocellular carcinoma. I have already had radiation treatment with very little improvement. Next steps are embolism of the spleen, chemotherapy with NEXAVAR, and hopefully, studies done with experimental methods. It takes a lot of money and time and numerous visits to the hospital.
My main concern is getting to my appointments. I need to purchase a good, used car that won’t break down. I live in Pennsylvania and my doctors are in New York City at Presbyterian Columbia / Cornell Hospital, and need approximately $10,000 - $12,000 to do so.
I don’t have any money left for this. Any monies I put into travel, medications, doctor and hospital bills that the insurance doesn’t pay. I have never asked; I always prefer to give. Now, I have no other recourse but to this. I already had to file bankruptcy two years ago, and my pockets are empty.
Any help that anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated and hopefully I can somehow pay it forward.
