Little pebbles can make a house...

I am grateful everyday for all that I have, but it takes a trip to a country like India to remind me of how truly blessed all of us really are in the USA.  We may think that we are struggling, but it isn't until you see the reality of "struggle" that the millions of impoverished people of India endure that we have to take a step back and reevaluate the selfishness of our lifestyle.  What is more amazing to me is that despite the lack of everything they have, which may include running water, electricity or more than one meal a day, these people are extremely hardworking (and make next to nothing with some earning maybe only up to $5/day at 12 hours/day if they are lucky).  They are grateful, respectful, kind, make the most of all they have, do not pity themselves and most importantly... are very very giving.  It is for these reasons that I ask you to read the story below and consider giving what may be an insignificant amount to you but a world a difference to someone less fortunate.

Savitri is a very sweet and hardworking cleaning lady in my parents' building in Bangalore, India.  She was born into poverty and was not educated.  Abandoned by her husband, Savitri has been raising and providing for her two children by cleaning people's homes from 7am to 7pm everyday of the week averaging about $10/day.  With this money she has to be able to feed and provide for her children and herself as well as pay for her daughter's education.  Savitri's son is still in a school that is government funded and is at no cost to her.  However, her daughter Nehtra has already graduated from such school and excelled while she was there, which got her into engineering college.  Nehtra has thrived from having nothing to wanting to achieve a level of education that will empower her to seek a better job and in turn be able to take care of her mother and younger brother.  The engineering college will cost $1500 per year, which will be very tough to cover with her mother Savitri's income.

I would love for all of us to be able to help such a hard-working, selfless young Indian woman attain her goal to become an engineer.  With a donation of any amount, I think we can easily raise enough money to cover at least one year for Nehtra, which will take some of the weight off her mother (who has already started taking on more jobs with what little time left in the day that she has to be able to pay for Nehtra's education.)  If we can raise even more, that would be beyond incredible.  Neither one of these women have asked for anything, nor do they have any idea that I am trying to do this for them.

Please take a moment, reflect within yourself, and decide if you want to make a world of difference in these women's lives.  Remember, all it takes is giving up a coffee, beer, meal out, etc. and you have already donated towards half of a day's work for Savitri.  Any amount is appreciated.  Please feel free to pass this on to others as many are not aware of the reality of life beyond the scope of theirs or of those beyond our American society.  You can help educate and fight the ignorance.

Please note: The people of this country earn in Indian Rupees (Rs. 50 = $1), and for them Rs. 1 is the same as $1 to us, so even a $1 goes a long way, and $10 even further, and so on!

Much love - Minakshi (Mina) Arora
