Helping Poor Boys Staff and Families!

POOR BOYS-

With COVID-19 putting a distressing halt on our Richmond restaurant community, we have to keep our Friends, Families, and Staff in mind. -  Our team at Poor Boys consists of 20 dedicated staff members that are now unfortunately with out jobs. We have single parent servers and Lead Cooks that have to provide for themselves and their children during this crisis. We have young VCU students without family in the area that have to juggle finishing their education while keeping financially afloat.  We have staff that walk and bike to work everyday with a smile on their face, that now have to worry about their only source of income. We have a great family at Poor Boys that have spent their time and efforts serving the community and making sure that our customers are taken care of in this great City that we call Richmond. Our family needs your help!

Our brand is built on family that works together and works hard to make sure that we are successful and having fun each day we are open.

In 1929, the “poor boy” aka Po Boy was created by the Martin brothers, who came up with the simple but hearty sandwich. The Amalgamated Association of Electric Street Railway Employees, Division 194, sent over a thousand unionized streetcar drivers and motormen off the job and onto the picket line. The Martin brothers would give away sandwiches to the strikers that usually consisted of fried potatoes, gravy, and spare bits of roast beef on French bread. Creating the ‘’PO BOY Sandwich.’’

The story goes that when a striking union member walked into their restaurant/ grocery store, Benny would call to Clovis, “Here comes another poor boy!” Today, hot roast beef poor boys dripping with gravy are the close relatives of these originals. The Martin brothers made simple food that wouldn’t cost that much and in return, you would see a rich man in New Orleans sitting with the poorest man, together holding a conversation over a Po Boy Sandwich.

This is what it’s all about for our restaurant; bringing together different types of people. Now all we’re asking is for you all to help out our staff and their families during this crisis. Yes, times are hard right now but one of the best things about the People of Richmond and this community is that We Are Survivors
