I am starting this campaign to help one of the football players from North High. Khyren Purdy is from Lahaina Surf. His family lost everything in a matter of seconds! The apartment complex where they lived across from his grandparents went completely up in flames on Tuesday, August 8th. This is the same home Khyren took my son, Jonathan to meet his family over spring break April 2023. They stayed in this apartment and took him sightseeing to all the landmarks in his hometown where they ate and shopped on Front Street which happened to be minutes from their home. As we all know that area was completely destroyed by the fire. Khyren’s mother and grandmother had to make a split decision to evacuate to save their lives. Genesis Purdy left her white SUV parked in front of her apartment and hopped in her mother’s truck. Unfortunately her car along with all of their family possessions & heirlooms were lost in the fire. Her parents lived in the unit across for them, lost all of their belongings as well.  Khyren’s father, Kepuhi was trapped on the other side of the island with no cell service. Genesis had no idea of his whereabouts and didn’t have contact with her husband for nearly 48 hours. The stress & anxiety she was going through was unimaginable. The family has since reunited and is all together where they are staying at her sister’s place for the time being.

Khyren is currently living in North Torrance he was sent to North High to play football his junior & senior year when Covid shut down all sports in Hawaii so he would have an opportunity to play his last two seasons of high school football. He is an only child whose parents sacrificed everything to send him out to California. Khyren graduated in June from North High School and is preparing to start his school year in a couple of weeks at El Camino College in Torrance. CA. Khyren waited patiently to get updates from his mom all the while watching Lahaina burn on his tv where there was nothing he could do to help his family. With everything that this family has endured the realization is they may not have the funds to buy food, toiletries, clothes let alone the funds to pay for his tuition. They only have the clothes on their backs from this devastating event . They were planning to go to donation sites to find clothes & shoes, keep in mind sizes are hard to come by as the entire Lahaina community is doing the same exact steps to survive.

They are also facing the possibility of being reduced to one income since they lost their car in the fire. This is truly heartbreaking and I feel like the North High Saxon community can help this Saxon family during their darkest hour.
