Helping Our Dear Friend Ayesha

Ayesha is an angel on earth; she is innocent, caring, ready to help anyone at any time and one of the most understanding people that one can come across. She's a loving daughter, wife, sister and a caring friend with a loving heart. She is 32 years and has been married for three years. Ayesha was living a happy life with big plans for her future. At the beginning of 2022, January 5th to be exact, all her hopes and dreams took a pause as she got to know that she has a liver tumor, the size of 7cm in diameter and that it is cancerous. Doctors have declared that a surgery nor a transplant is possible with its size and the way its situated and also because it has spread to lymph nodes throughout the liver. This cancer is an intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, which can only be treated through chemotherapy. She had to go through a liver stent surgery in order to control the bilirubin level in her blood, as the chemotherapy was not possible until the bilirubin level was back to normal.

She, with her family, managed to afford one cycle of chemotherapy that contained six rounds of IV administration. Each round, she had to intake IV for 50 hours in total. The whole cycle lasted for three months in total. She started showing progress at the end of the first chemotherapy cycle, and now her oncologists have prescribed her to go through 2 more cycles of the same, which means 12 more rounds. Affording chemotherapy in Sri Lanka is quite challenging as it is extremely expensive. Also, the income of a middle-class family is not at all sufficient to bare the costs of such an expensive cycle of treatments. Though Ayesha and her family had managed through one cycle of chemotherapy with six rounds of IV, they find it very difficult to continue for 12 more rounds. The only hope for her at this stage is to undergo this treatment.

Following are the total estimated costs in Sri Lankan Rupees for the chemotherapy treatments.

• Chemotherapy treatment and Hospitalisation – Rs. 400,000 x 12 = Rs. 4,800,000

• Cost of Medicine- Rs.300,000 x 12 = Rs. 3,600,000

• Blood Tests – Rs. 20,000 x 12 = Rs. 240,000

• Other expenses – Rs. 300,000
